Last week in science we did a DNA lab where we extracted DNA from a strawberry.
We first crushed the strawberry by putting in dish soap, water and salt into a bag then we added the strawberry and smashed the bag. We then took some alcohol and filled a test tube halfway. The strawberry chunks fell in and clear, white strands (DNA) came out and floated on the top of the alcohol.
I was with Lucas and we both took turns trying to bring some of the strands up and out of the test tube but they did not want to come out.
After many tries we finally got some of those strands.
We put them on a test slide and put them under a microscope.
What’s really cool about this lab is that I could see the cells of the DNA it was really cool to see.
DNA is a very interesting part of cells. DNA is in every single cell and give its genetic code (what it has to do and how it does it)
Then a couple classes later we built a DNA model.
We made one with ten strings. Five with the A-T pairing and five with the C-G pairing.
We also learned that strands are attached to a ladder like structure.
