Lonsdale

So, recently in humanities we have been learning about the history of Vancouver. Our end project is a podcast focusing on a certain topic that pertains to Vancouver’s history. My group is doing city development. On top of the project we are also doing an literary essay about a book we are reading in class. To add on top of that even more we are doing mini assignments. One of them was called the Namesake assignment.

For this assignment we had to chose an area of street of Vancouver. My group chose Lonsdale.

The end product was a video that covered the name history of the place, a description of the place and any other fun facts you come across.

Since I was in the same group as my podcast we did similar roles. Michael did the research, I did the script and Lucas did the editing.

Michael did his research (which took a while because it was hard to find any info on the namesake) and then I began working on the script.

In the script I focused on the history of the place and how it came to be what it is today. I wrote about the current layout of the area and it’s various uses. Then the reminding script was the history of the area and why it was named Lonsdale.

The name came from Arthur Haywood-Lonsdale. He was born in Britain and came over to Moodyville (now Lonsdale) where he invested and bought lots of land. The avenue’s origin was a logging road.

Vancouver started out as a logging area with a mill in the downtown area and a mill right where the Lonsdale Quay is.

Lonsdale avenue was the only way up to the cutting areas so it makes sense that it is one of the more prominent streets of the north shore.

The mill later turned into shipyards (which were heavily used in WW2) and now it is the site of Lonsdale Quay and Seaspan.

Now on another note the weekend we had to get this project done was also forecasted to have a ton of rain. Since it is Vancouver it rained a ton. The plan was to go film the area for the day but the rain would mess up the footage and we didn’t really want to be outside for too long (I also had ultimate that night so I really didn’t want to get soaked twice). Instead we came to my house and recorded the script.

Since we couldn’t go get footage we used some videos from online and found some images as well.

Lucas put it all together and uploaded it.

Oh, I almost forgot, I have been doing a ton of GarageBand tracks for the podcast as well as the video so I’ve got about 15 so far. Here’s my favourite.

One of the biggest requirements for the video and the podcast is that we need to include a bibliography. We put our bibliography in the video but Ms. Maxwell wants it in the description. So for our second draft we fixed it up and also edited some of the volume issues.
