Workplace Worksafe

So, because grade 10 is so awesome we have to take a course called Planning. It’s pretty much where we look at careers and working rights. It’s similar to Health and Career last year.

We recently did Workplace Saftey in B.C. Westarted off by watching some pretty interesting videos about some actual people’s experiences getting injured on the job. Those videos were a little graphic but I was reminded of the videos I see when I do my standard first aid course. While watching them I actually started to go over what I would do in those situations and how I would treat those injuries.

We also did a few activities identifying workplace hazards and understanding our rights as a worker. Although it’s mostly just common sense, if you don’t feel safe don’t do it, there is some things I learned. For example workers are only allowed to be exposed to 85 decibels daily. We used a decibel meter from Ms. Willemse’s phone and we usually talk louder than that every class.

Then because we are doing this course through PLP we had to create a piece of media that reflected what we did in class. I created an advertisement. (I know we did this in grade 8 but it was my best idea) I found some stats about workplace injuries and began the process of constructing an ad. I used the same app we made our grade 8 advertisements on, Canva, and I put it all together. The focus of the ad was to get a worker to start thinking about their job and if it’s safe. Hopefully the would read the link at the bottom of the ad and go to that website to learn their rights and make sure they know what to do

I haven’t had a job yet but I am looking for one so I’m glad we did this unit so I can make sure I’m safe on the job as well as know my rights as a worker. I have a feeling I will need to know it for the future.
