In this project we had to answer the driving question of “How does what we see read and hear influence us?” this project helped us by creating this advertisement. We had 6 milestones however I’m only going to include the ones who helped our group answer the driving question.
Milestone 3 had us look at an ad from the past and analyze it using historical perspective so we could find the techniques and appeals, comprehend the text and how they would influence us now vs how they would influence people from 50 years ago. My ‘Historical Media Analysis’ post is here to read more.
Milestone 4 was the biggest milestone out of all, it was a shared numbers document where we would record all of our ideas, ad drafts, feedback, of our advertisement. Designing all our ideas, photos, and text, to create different drafts with different ideas.Think of it as the search history of the advertisement. The LAUNCH journal pushed us through our project and each stage summarizing all our ideas into our final draft.
However there was more than the milestones that helped us create this ad and answer the driving question, one big thing we focused on was advertising techniques and appeals, what they are, why they are so important and most importantly how they influence our beliefs on a certain topic. Without the techniques there is no influence, without influence you just have a bad ad. It was easily the biggest and longest part of our project, it helped me because it helped me create the fundamentals for this ad.
To make a real advertisement of our own, we first had to look at other advertisements, analyze its media, message, techniques and appeals, doing our best to comprehend the text or videos so we had a better understanding of what our ad was supposed to look like, then innovate those ideas into our ad. After all, understanding is a big part of learning.
We created our ads for a real business, so of course to create and ad our business would want, we sent emails with out drafts, and calling our business to understand what we need to focus on, what products, colour schemes, fonts, everything technical about the ads the rest was up to the group. So with everything we worked on with our project. We learnt that a big part of advertising are techniques and appeals. So we all looked at the techniques and appeals making photos using camera techniques such as:

With everything I did in this project, this helped my group create our final advertisement and gave us an example for the driving question: How does what we hear, read, and see influence us? Let’s take our advertisement for example, we all know that an advertisement is used to give information quickly and to appeal to an audience quickly. However if you tried to make an advertisement in an essay, the message wouldn’t have the same effect as essays font portray what an advertisement does. Media influencing us is all about techniques, appeals and marketing. What we hear read and see influences us because it is made to appeal to us specifically. Which in a way also proves that the medium is the message, concluding what I learnt in this project.
Awesome reflection Alfie! You explain your process really well, and highlight the parts that stand out to you (like the interview process and working with a client!) I agree with your final conclusions here to the Driving Question. Nice work!
