Hello I’m Alicia!

Hello! I’ve recently worked on a new project PGP. The project is about Making Career Life Choices. This blog post isn’t about that project as a whole, but more about a big section called “Marketing You”. I complete many different aspects such as creating a resume and business card. The driving question for this section of the project, was “How can I effectively market myself to employers?”.

To start of “Marketing You” I started to create a resume. Honestly, I’ve been procrastinating making a resume, and I’m glad this project made me create one. In class we brainstormed what should be included in a resume. The outline was to include:

– Education

– Certificates Work + Volunteer Experience

– Contact Information ( Name + Email + Blog)

– References Skills + Qualities

– Objective

With this outline I started working on inputting data into a canva template, in which I tweaked to look good with the information placed. My peer, Fraser, took photos for my headshot. I used the photo in one of my two resumes. I had to edit my resume to balance out the contents of my  information with the photo. I think this process of editing really should my ability to creatively and critically think.

In addition to a resume I also created an outline to a cover letter/email. We did a brief class activity where we discussed what the the important things in a cover letter are. Here’s what we came up with:

– Professional E-Mail Address

– Subject Line

– Introduction

– Objective/Reason for Reaching Out

– Relevant Qualifications

– Call to Action

– Grammar – Spelling – Proofread

– Sign off

I made fun business card about being a professional short person. If you scroll to the top of this post you’ll see them. My friend, Dana made a funky business card to go along with mine. If you want to check them out visit her blog, where she hopefully shows them (if she doesn’t that’s a mistake).

In addition to this goofy business card I created a professional personal business card. To make my business card there was a lot of trial (revising). In the process of revising I got lots of feedback from peers. I started out with a bunch of Canva templates, then decided to alter them at will. I think but just having fun a being a bit creative I was able to make two that I’m proud of.

After creating the business card we did some Flash challenges. One of the flash challenges was to create a mock job interview. We were tasked with creating questions that we would be asked, as well as brief answers. I worked with Makenna to create our interview. We filmed and edited it together. I think this was a great use of my communication skills.

I did a simulation of being an UBER driver to get me into what the ‘gig’ economy is. To be honest I did not do great in the simulation. The ‘gig’ economy is not for me. If you want to learn more about how I did in this simulation read the reflection that I did.

This part of PGP was really helpful to give me a foundation of what I need to start my process for my future. I think the answer to the question “How can I effectively market myself to employers?” is… I can effectively market myself by planning and brainstorm the best attributes of myself in relation to what I’m marketing myself for.

Thanks for reading! What would be the topic of a funny business card you make for yourself?

Alicia 😀
