Steampunked Mona Lisa

Hello fellow humans and welcome to my latest & greatest blog post! I want to warn you though, if you get lost in fascination about the world of steampunk from my painting, that’s just the beginning. There’s so much to the world of steampunk, it’s amazing how tons of everyday items can be transformed into something completely different by maybe just turning it inside out. Our most recent assignment in flight has been to think of a question about steampunk that was not directly covered in class and we must find the answer with research. My question is: “How can I steampunk a classical painting?” I have found the answer to this question with a whole lot of research about steampunk. I originally wanted to find a painting that maybe had a car, or something like that but I eventually decided that I could do something really cool with the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. After #observing the painting I thought of many ways that I could creatively streampunk this painting. Before I explain a lot of it, I didn’t add any metaphors or background to anything in the painting because I didn’t paint it (obviously) and also because I didn’t really feel like that was part of my question, you know? I could maybe do something like that if we get assigned yet another one of these steampunk projects. I spent quite a few hours on this Steampunked Mona Lisa because I am definitely not that great at drawing. I tried to add as much detail and cover most things you’d see at a steampunk festival but of course, I can’t draw for the life of me so I had to stick to things on the more simple side. You wouldn’t believe how much time I spent on the eye makeup, I tried soooooo hard to make a smokey eye and it just wasn’t working at all. I actually had a lot of fun making this Steampunked Mona Lisa and I really hope it lived up to expectations.

Crane Brinton

How it began: people learned about the internet and saw what you could do on it. They started uploading videos and making websites. More people joined because they felt restless and held down by unacceptable restrictions in society, religion, the economy or the government. (Crane Brinton’s causes of a revolution) They figured out that back then you could put a lot of stuff out there on the internet and not many people would see it or get offended so they started posting more and more and creating more stuff. Gradually, the internet became bigger and now it is so huge that it has solved police cases and made people famous. Reading about what Crane Brinton has said about the causes, conditions, and stages of a revolution i wouldn’t think that it fits into what he has said. I feel like this kind of revolution would need a different kind of explanation, one that might exclude violence. But there are definitely smaller revolutions within the internet that might fit into his context. Here’s a small drawing representing how i thought Crane Brinton’s theory could relate to the internet.img_9290

No puns for today:(

Ants on a Plane

Well, this summer was definitely… interesting. It was filled with all different kinds of microwaved burritos and quality family time together. *eye twitch* I’m currently coming home from my latest and greatest family adventure to Kelowna. We were visiting my nonna and nonno (it’s Italian I know I’m exquisito) and unfortunately they don’t have wifi. *cries a river* My cousin normally comes to visit as well but she couldn’t so I had A LOT of time on my hands. Four days, to be exact. My birthday had just passed and my other cousin lent me 6 books and found the two in bookshelf she gave me for xmas that I still haven’t read so I also brought those to Kelowna. I ended up bringing ten books because I still haven’t read The Fate of Ten (lol I should get an award for procrastinating this much) and also a horror book that I’m too wuss to read but I thought I might be in the mood for horror/thriller. I wasn’t. It did turn out that I didn’t actually have that much free time but I still managed to finish seven out of the ten books I brought. Seven in four days! Wooooo!! We had some great Italian food and I learned how to shove forkfuls and forkfuls of pasta down my gutter. It’s a really great and useful skill to have. Driving back from Kelowna isn’t the greatest because we’ve found at least 10 ants and they just so happened to all be crawling on me. Hurray. Other than that not much happened in Kelowna and I really enjoyed doing activities with my family.

image This summer I did a lot of diving and I went to provincials. It was held in Coquitlam and I had a lot of fun. In summary, this summer was delicious.

My Student Led Conference

SLC
My best evidence of learning this yer that I’m most proud of would be my Renaissance poster. It might not seem like much, but the amount of research, time, and effort I put into it was outstanding. I tried really hard to add detail and draw the pictures clear so people could understand it. In the beginning of this project, I wasn’t so sure about what I would do and how I could make it but while I was researching I came up with a layout of where I could draw out all my ideas and what style I should draw the pictures in. Even if I had my idea, I was still unsure of how this would turnout. I didn’t think I could pull this project off and make it within the timeline I was given so I worked even harder to make sure that when people look at what I drew on the poster they’d understand what I was trying to show and what I was trying to represent.

Before we started the poster, we had to research 3 different people from the Renaissance. We researched a thinker, artist, and scientist. My thinker was Pietro Summonte, my artist was Gentile Bellini, and my scientist was Jean Baptiste Deneys. For this assignment, we were told to make a triple Venn diagram about these 3 people comparing what they had in common during their life, their beliefs, traditions, etc.

Using the information from the Venn diagram we had to make a poster comparing today to the Renaissance. In my poster, I compared gender equality and I showed that in the Renaissance women were inferior to men because all three of the famous people I was researching were all male. The next thing I showed in my poster was that all of my people worked for a group. For example, Gentile Bellini was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice. Jean Baptiste was the official physician of King Louis XIV. I think that it means that politics were a lot different back then and that people might not have had as much freedom as we do today.

I made two drafts of the poster and in the first one, one of the major improvements was that I had an Italian flag and a flag from France drawn because all of my people I was researching were from either one of those places. The flags didn’t represent or show what I was trying to get across to the people looking at my poster. As I was researching and looking for a new idea, I found that everyone had a job within the community that they helped out with so I decided to change the flags in that comparison.

My best evidence of work that could’ve been improved was from the iBook, the Sikhism Explain Everything. Doing this project was very challenging to me because I I found the app Explain Everything very hard to use because I didn’t understand it even when I spent so much time playing around with it and creating new things with it. I got very frustrated when using the app. It took me very long to make the EE and it really didn’t help when I was having challenges and feeling frustrated. However, I do think that my group pulled together at the end and so did my sikhism Explain Everything. Working in groups to make the EEs was very helpful because I could ask any group member to help me understand the app and how to use it. I do think I could’ve worked harder to improve the EE and add more animation and pictures. I also think I could’ve edited the script just a little bit more to make it fit better with the Explain Everything.

When I look back to the beginning of the year, I see that I’ve developed a lot in writing, art, and so much more. I’ve been given great learning opportunities like going fencing, visiting religious temples, mosques, and churches. I’ve learned how to research and how to get information off the internet which I wasn’t familiar to in the beginning of the year. I learned how to use so many new apps and I learned that hard work and effort will pay off when making something. I learned new ways of organization and I really enjoyed this year. Thank you!

Science Project

Scimathics Light, Geometry, & Symmetry
This project represents light, geometry, and symmetry in different ways. The mirrors circuit to show that the raven’s light is bright and strong enough to travel that long. In the mirrors and reflection display laser light was used because it doesn’t spread. The mirrors were flat surfaces so that the light wouldn’t scatter when it was reflected and it would bounce off at equal angles. Because light travels in straight lines from what Ibn Al-Haytham taught us, the light hits the mirrors and then reflects to appear like zig zags.
In the middle of this poster board there’s a display where you put the laser pointer in the right corner of the board and the light is bent (refraction) by the transparent concave lens. Next, the light hits a transparent prism and is reflected into a glass right angle triangular prism. There is more refraction shown through the convex lens. The convex lens directs the light to a single focal point. On the top of the poster in the middle rainbow raven made of clay to represent colour, reflection symmetry, and opacity (lacking transparency or translucence.)
In my opinion, I found this project to be pretty cool and interesting. It was very challenging to come up with an idea to use and I found it hard to understand at the beginning. After thinking about it though, an idea struck me and with my dad’s help we were able to make the poster from the blueprint.

And now, puns about light. But be warned, I’m not too bright. I’m actually feeling a bit light headed at the moment, but making these still made me feel pretty delighted.
A photon checks into a hotel and is asked if he needs any help with his luggage.
He replies with “No, I’m travelling light.”

“Woah man, are you carrying a house? You must be hella strong!”
“Nah bro, it’s a lighthouse.”

When does bad light end up? In prism.

iBook and Explain Everything

The iBook
I’m back, did you miss me? No? Just the legendary puns? Same. Sometimes in life, you’ve gotta have a little pun. Today I’ll be writing about the latest & greatest iBook in the history of iBooks! For this project, our teacher left a lot of it to us to figure out during the timeline we were given. Everyone was given roles in groups of two to six or seven. There were many roles given to make this iBook such as the graphic designers, writers, poets, and much more. With Willa, my fellow classmate and friend we were both given the poet role. We had to make poems about each religion and each poem had to be decently long. Making this iBook was a new experience to me and I enjoyed it a lot and found it quite interesting. I had a lot of fun in the making of this and I think it’s a really good idea to assign roles to people so that they know what they need to do.

On the other hand, there’s the EEs. I think that it was a good idea to have us make something like this but in the making of it I didn’t enjoy it. I found the app Explain Everything very hard to use because I didn’t understand it even when I spent so much time playing around with it and creating new things with it. I think this project was a great idea but I found that doing the EEs was very, very challenging.

My Renaissance Poster

Renaissance Poster
Hello again! We’ve been studying the renaissance in class for the past few weeks and we were assigned a project where we had to make a poster that answers this question: How did the Renaissance influence the Western Worldview? I made my project on my iPad using different apps to create the final version.

In my poster, I compared gender equality and I showed that in the Renaissance women were inferior to men because all three of the people I was researching were all male. The next thing I showed in my poster was that all of my people worked for a group. For example, Gentile Bellini was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice. Jean Baptiste was the official physician of King Louis XIV. (14) I think that it means that politics were a lot different back then and that people might not have had as much freedom as we do today.

Here’s a picture of my poster. I had made a few drafts so I decided to include both to show the progress and compare how the first draft was different from the last one.

And now, some Renaissance puns

How am I supposed to breathe… With no heir?

Who invented Arthur’s round table? Sir Cumference!

I’m afraid that’s all for today. See you in the next post!

Religion Field Study

Religion Field Study Blogpost
For our religion unit, our class has been visiting sacred religious spots. The places we visited include temples, churches, mosques, and more. We were told to answer a question for our unit. It was: “How is the worldview of these different religions represented in the real world?”

When our class went on the first field trip it was for the whole school day and it took place on Richmond’s Highway to Heaven. All the temples we visited were located near each other.

Up first was the Hindu temple. We were told to take off our shoes upon entering then we headed up the stairs. I noted as we headed up the stairs that there were a few big, bright, and detailed chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings. We were brought into a room with a large painted picture on wall of the walls that represents a big part of the Hindu religion. We were then brought into a large room with chairs lined up along the walls facing the front wall and the far side wall. Along the large wall there were many beautiful statues of Hindu gods. The statues showed what the Hindu gods wore and each represented what the Hindu gods were like. On the far side wall there was a set up there that was used to get legally married. We were taught about the Hindu gods, the history of Hinduism, and the Founder. We were shown some of the Hindu traditions and we were offered food at the end. I really liked the person we had who taught us about the Hindu history and traditions.
Here are some photos from the temple:

Up next was the Tibetan Buddhist temple. Upon entering, I knew this temple was going to be very well-decorated. This temple was very beautiful with so many bright colours everywhere you looked. There was a huge golden statue of the Buddha with large elephant tusks. There were cloths hanging from the high ceilings and flowers all over the room. Every little thing in the temple represented something and had a deep, important meaning to it. We were taught about the Buddhism traditions, history, founder, and their beliefs.
Here are some pictures I took in the Tibetan Buddhism temple: image image image image

After that we went to visit a Chinese Buddhism temple and we were taught about meditation. At some points, they had us take off our shoes to meditate. They gave us a tour of the temple and we were taught a lot about their history. We were given hot chocolate and they offered us candy and some of their religious books.

In the afternoon we visited the Sikh temple. We were fed Indian food for lunch and I loved it. While we were there, there was a prayer going on so we bowed and sat and watched the prayer for a little while. We were offered candy and then we headed upstairs and we were taught about the history, founder, traditions, and Sikh beliefs.

The next field trip we went on was just for a small part of the day. We visited the Jewish temple Synagogue, and we learned a lot about how they pray. We also learned about the Jewish history, founder, and the Old Testament.

On our last day we visited a Christian church first. We learned a lot about the religion and we were allowed to explore all over the church.

The last place we visited was the Islamic Mosque. I learned so much about Islam there and it was a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed these field trips. I think it’s amazing that how during our religion unit my teachers would go out of their way to bring us to so many places so we could learn even more about religion. I learned so much about religion after these trips and I think it was really awesome that we could actually visit temples, churches, and mosques. We were offered food and we even practiced meditating to deepen the experience.

My Worldview Explain Everything

A little while ago our class had to make an Explain Everything based on our worldview. We made 2 drafts for this project that had to include lots of the app’s features such as audio, pictures, text, video, and animation. Our Explain Everything needed to show that we had an understanding of worldview and it needed to have clear, interesting examples to help portray our personal worldview with deep thought. This was my first time ever using Explain Everything and I’ve got to admit, it was challenging but it was very good practice before we started our group religion projects. My teachers wanted us to use at least two other apps so I used Paper 53 to make my title page and Snapseed to edit my pictures. It was very tricky learning to use this app but I (somewhat) managed. Here’s my second draft of my Worldview Explain Everything: https://youtu.be/EqJTuQ4brZk

imageWork I’m Most Proud Of

Some of the work I’m most proud of is my quilt square. I was really creative when I made the design of my quilt square because I made the layout look like bricks stacked on top of each other to represent how the people in the city we created all need each other in order to stay up and how everyone helps each other out. I filled in the bricks with different colours to represent different characters and events that happened in the story. Along with the quilt square and story, we each had to make two blogposts about our quilt. In the first one, I wrote more about my quilt individually and the challenges that I had while making my quilt. In the second blogpost, I wrote about my part is of the story I was representing and I included the other parts of the story along with links to the other group member’s blogposts about their quilt.

Work That Demonstrates my Growth as a Learner

Work that demonstrates my growth as a leaner would be my Destination Imagination project. By taking part in this project, I learned how to work in a group and be patient with others when working under pressure. This project taught me how to be more open minded with other people when they share their ideas. By supporting others, I learned to work cooperatively with other people and I developed some leadership skills by being more assertive with my own ideas.

Work That Shows How I’ve Developed A Growth Mindset

My Destination Imagination project is a great example of how I’ve developed a growth mindset because at the beginning of the project I thought that with my group, it was going to be very difficult to write a script a make a whole play. My group wasn’t doing very well with the instant challenges so I didn’t think that we were going to do very well in the Destination Imagination regional competition. I didn’t try very hard to brainstorm and contribute much to the group at the beginning but later on I started to understand the project more and I contributed more to the project during classes.
