On November 6, 2019, I participated in take your kid to work day. Take your kid to work day is when you go to your parent’s work and learn more about their profession and what goes on where they work. I’m first going to be talking about where I went for take your kid to work day. I’m going to talk about my experience and everything I’ve learned. In the end, I will show a video I have created about where I went.
For take your kid to work day, I went to my dad’s workplace. My dad is a respirologist. A respirologist is a doctor that specializes in the lung. My dad has been a lung specialist for twenty years. This was the first time I spent a full day learning about what he does. When I got to the hospital, there were many other kids there for the same reason I was there. The hospital put us into a group to visit different stations around the hospital. Here was the first part of my day.
Even though my dad is a respirologist, we still got to see some of the different doctors around the hospital. The first doctor we saw was a cardiologist. A cardiologist is a doctor that specializes in the heart. The cardiologist talked about what she does and the different types of people she sees. She did an ECG 
(Electrocardiography) which is a test to see the electrical activity in your heart. The cardiologist talked about how some of the people that she sees come in more than once a day even though she tells them everything is fine. She has to stay very patient to calm them down and to make sure they understand their fine.
For the next part of the day, we got to see a pharmacist. A pharmacist is someone who writes prescriptions for the patient and measures the dose of medicine each patient should have for their illness. The first thing the pharmacist showed us was how the drugs were transported around the hospital. There was a clinic but they also had a station that had tubes connecting to the other hospital buildings. They would put the medicine in a capsule and shoot it up the tubes into the right buildings.
Another part of their job is making the medications. We got to crush some of the ingredients and mix in the cream to create the medicine. I’ve realized how precise you have to be as a pharmacist. They have to be exact with everything they do. They have to make sure they give each patient the right dose, they have to make sure the ingredients they add into the medication are exact. They even have to make sure they’re sending the medicine to the right building and the right patient.
The last part of the hospital we got to see was the power room. This is a very important part of the hospital because its where all of the power is made, kept, and distributed to the hospital. Without power, the hospital cant run. The electricians showed us the boiling room. The boiling room is where they boil huge amounts of water to create steam as heating for the hospital. They also showed us the electricity room where all the electricity is stored. Just like the cardiologist and the pharmacist, the electricians have to be aware of everything around them and make sure all of the equipment is operating. If anything goes wrong and the power shuts down, patients could die. This is why electricians are very important at the hospital.
After take your kid to work day was over, I compiled all of the clips that I had taken and made it into a short video. In the video, I briefly explain my experience, what Ive learned about the hospital and what I’ve learned about how doctors help our community. Below is my take your kid to work day video.
Overall, I thought this was a great experience. It has helped me learn more about how each doctor‘s contribution helps the hospital. Doctors help out in their community because they treat anyone that comes in who is sick. Whether wealthy or poor, the hospital will take them in to help them get back to normal. One thing I noticed all doctors had in common was they all loved helping others. Even though they all have different role in the hospital, their all working to the same goal which is to help the people. Whether its the cardiologist, the pharmacist, or the power engineer, their all working to help others. My dad said in the interview that the best part about his job was helping people who are very sick and that haven’t been able to work in a while. Now, because of take your kid to work day, I have been opened up to a new career path that I may take in the future.
