Hey blog, remember my last post where I reflected on the recent Canadian election and talked about voter turnout? Iโll be continuing with the theme of elections and using what I learned from that previous post to introduce to you, the newest unofficial political party of Canadaโฆ.. the Alpha Vert Party.
After building an understanding of how the Canadian government is structured, I started working with my group to put together a party that is unique from the ones that already exist. Thatโs how the โAlpha Vertโ Party was started, and now we have our own mission, priorities, and values that I will be presenting to you in this post.ย
This image summarizes what our party is about, youโll notice a few things including
- A focus on climate change
- A new proposed electoral system
- Our location on the political spectrumย
Climate Change
Action on climate change is something that we talked about a lot in our group, so it naturally ended up becoming one of our main focuses. However, we didnโt wanโt to be exactly like the Green Party, so we all agreed that the way we would approach solving the climate crisis should be different than theirs.
For this specific issue we want to focus only on electric vehicles and renewable energy. We would create incentives for Canadians to purchase electric cars, have electric public transportation and more charging stations. We would work with sustainable companies for electric vehicles and renewable energy.
Our party wants to re-organize the budget for the climate to more effectively pay for these solutions. We want to maintain the economy but not destroy the climate.
Electoral System
One thing that makes our party unique is that we propose a new electoral system. We wanted to create a system thatโs simple and prevents minority governments. The reason we wanted a system that had no possibility of a minority government is ย so that when the government is making decisions, it can be more productive and simple than when multiple parties are opposed.
The way the system works is there are three parties in each election that Canadians can vote for, and when they vote they vote for the party leader. The party that has the most votes wins, but if they have less than 50% of the votes they must form a coalition government with the party that has the second most votes to ย become one party. In the next election the party with the least votes in the previous government switches with a new party that the parties vote for. This cycle repeats itself, and allows new parties to be in power but doesnโt split the vote with too many parties in one election.
In my last post I talked about voter turnout. I think this system could increase voter turnout because there are less parties to choose from and more people would vote if they voted for the party leaders.
Alpha Vert
Our party is more progressive and left. We are unique because we want to approach climate change in our own unique way and we propose a unique electoral system. If people could vote for our party, they should because they wanโt change for a better Canada in the future.
