Hey, today Iโ€™m not here with a SBC post, but instead a reflection. You know what that means, one of our projects has come to an end. This time its all about the process of making a video and the best way to do this is deconstruct a video that already exists. This particular video was a short horror film called โ€œRunโ€. Iโ€™m warning you now about the jump scares.

The task was to create a carbon copy of this video. Now that youโ€™ve watched the original, you can watch the version by me, Emily, Kaia and Felix.

You just watched the final product, awesome. Now thatโ€™s not why Iโ€™m here to write this blog post. Iโ€™m here to tell you about the process of making it and what I learned so here we go.

The very first task was called โ€œKnowing Your Strengthsโ€. This involved the official 16 Personality Quiz. After answering several questions you receive a result describing which of the 16 personalities you are. One of the topics it describes is strengths and weaknesses. Basically we were trying to understand how we can work in groups based off of our strengths and weaknesses. The results were actually pretty accurate!

At that point we knew what we could offer when collaborating which was perfect because we were about to begin. We followed the steps of creating a great video, starting with pre-production. The first part of pre-production (skipping creating an idea because it was already done for us) was screenplay. We used a screenplay template on pages which really helped me understand the formatting although creating a screenplay format wise was hard. What was interesting was that all the groups formatted theirs differently, but in the end we got the hang of it. We had to analyze the video very carefully to create a screenplay that described it perfectly.

So we had a screenplay. Awesome, but what would be even more awesome and help us use technologies to create solutions? To visualize it all in a story board! In this step we used keynote animations which worked quite well. We had to include things like time stamps, angles, characters and setting.

The next step was to make a call sheet. A call sheet consists of locations to meet at, cast members, what is needed, and times. This step is important so everyone can be on the same page and the production can run smoothly!

Call Sheet

Once this step is complete you are ready for the next part. Production. Since most of the steps are pre-production and post-production the actual production is short. During production you must film, thats pretty much it. In this step we used the call sheet, story board and screenplay. All of the pre production steps were done to help us in the production.

Finally it was time for post-production where we take everything we filmed and put all together into an amazing video. We had to edit, add audio and publish. If there were any problems like a missing scene or wrong timing then we would have to solve that problem by re-filming or using tools like editing. A good way to help us identify problems like these is peer critique. We showed our video to another group and they helped us find things to fix. Once we had fixed all the problems with different tools we were ready to publish it to the world.

In the end I learned how to create a film using various tools, technology, and strategies. Our iPads are powerful pieces of technology that can help us produce creative artifacts in all parts of a production. Problem solving is also something I practiced in this project. For example, when we were filming we faced a problem. The problem was that when we filmed while running the camera was too shaky. To solve this problem we mounted the iPad onto a bike to get a steadier shot. It was great learning all these things! It will really help my video making skills in the future too.

Thats all for this post,
See ya later.
