DI Provincials, the not so bad experience

So D.I happened again. And this time was even more fun. DI is short for destination imagination and is a global event where kids come together to solve problems and complete challenges, by learning and using critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving. I have a more detailed explanation in my previous blog post about DI Regionals, which I suggest reading first, and you can see more info on the DI website, here. Here’s a video explaining the challenge that we had to do:

I was super excited to do this challenge because I am very “techy” person. So it was time to get to work. We looked at some things that went wrong with our last DI.

The shovel on the Maze Traveller was leaking our yeast-warm water mixture, the elephant toothpaste reaction didn’t work. So we fixed the leaky Maze Traveller by using a rubber sealant around the cracks of the shovel. We solved the issue of the elephant toothpaste, by heating up the yeast really hot right before our performance, because last time, we thought that the reason the elephant toothpaste didn’t work was because the yeast wasn’t warm enough.

I woke up at 6 am to get ready for  DI, at 7 we drove out to surrey at Johnston Heights Secondary School,

and we got there at 8. I met up with my group, and we put our stuff in our prep room. Then we practiced our lines. I was Demos, the Maze Traveller. We practiced over and over and over again until everything was perfect. then it was time. we went into the gym of Johnston Heights, and the usual talk about flash photography, explaining what our challenge is, and explaining the scoring system, and setting up the maze. Then the clock started. we set up as fast as we could, we were waiting for Emerson to finish heating up the mixture, but luckily he made it back in time. I and Anika said our lines, Emerson drove the maze traveler, and all was going well until, well, it took forever to align the shovel on the maze traveler onto the other mixture for the elephant toothpaste, and it was still leaking a bit. so while everyone was awkwardly staring while Emerson was trying to figure out how the heck to align the shovel, I took action and poured the mixture myself. the elephant toothpaste was not at all successful. It only foamed up a bit. then we went for the key. Again, it took forever to pick up the key, which is why the timer said TIMES UP,  and we didn’t complete the maze. I’m not sure why the elephant toothpaste didn’t work, but I do know that I should have just grabbed the maze traveler and poured the mixture quicker.

If you want to see this all happen, watch this:

When it was all over, I was relieved but also

Overall I think that di was a very fun experience. An I’d be happy to do it again! As usual, that’s a burrito!
