We are currently going through our World War two unit, a part of it is doing a book review on a WWII book. I read the book Code Name Verity.
Code Name Verity
By Elizabeth Wein
I’m not sure of my opinion of this book i’an interesting story but I used an audiobook. Using an audiobook was probably not the best idea because I couldn’t get the understanding that you would get from reading the book. The reason why it’s worse with this book rather than others is because I has a lot of perspective changes. The best way to put it, is that it’s like when you watch a movie like the Princess Bride when they switch from reading to the events getting acted out. Most of the book is written by a character in the book, Julia. She was captured by German troops and was forced to write all of the tips of planes that she knew, but instead of just writing them all down, she tells the story of her friend Maddie who is a pilot and has had more experiences. She doesn’t even write in first person, going through her story as “queenie” In third person says stuff like “Queenie, or whatever her name was”. Which I’m sure just added to my confusion while listening. I do feel like would have been an interesting story if it wasn’t so confusing. There were points where I wasn’t sure if she was writing or if it was the author writing about her. Like when she is talking about how she has been treated, she’ll say stuff like “Part of the reason I’ve not written since last week is because I don’t want to put to paper what I am about to write”. I found this a bit frustrating and it meant that I didn’t get the full power of the story. If you are thinking of reading this book I would definitely suggest it to people who are interested in WWII, and enjoy the historical fiction genre. But I would warn them to focus while reading it there was a few times that I had to go back to reread a section because I missed an important fact.
