How Much Money is in Time

Hey there welcome back to another Scimatics Blog post this will be my last post of the grade 9 school year and also what I think is my last Scimatics post as PLP 10 does not offer Scimatics. But for now, let us get into it. This project was called Time Is Money. This project had us think about a product or a service that we could offer or sell and see if the money we make is worth the time. The Driving Question: “How can we predict our finances for the future?” The answer will come later. The final product was a video on the project so enjoy!

Now that you’ve seen the video let’s get into the Curricular Competencies

Competency 1

Understanding and solving apply multiple strategies to solve problems in both abstract and contextualized situations.

For this competency, we had to make sure all of our expenses and time were taken into account for our product. This would be Milestone 2 in the project as that was making the spreadsheet here is an up-close of it.

I found this Milestone fairly easy I think the reason for this is I already knew how to make these tennis ball holders as I made some for a grade 7 project. Therefore already I knew how much certain things would cost. My regret is not going back to change my spreadsheet after I realized that I could be more cost-effective.

Competency #2

Communicating and representing represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial, and symbolic form. This competency was making our graphs and understanding linear equations.

In terms of Milestones, the Milestones incorporated into this competency were 3 and 4 and the workbooks we did on linear equations. I think milestone 3 was the hardest for me as I did not fully understand how to make my equation and I needed help with it. I think the reason I struggled with this was I did not fully understand linear equations and how they work. For Milestone 4 it was simple as all we had to do was insert the equation into the graph. As you saw in the video my profit margin was huge as I sold 1 product for 30 dollars.

Competency #3

Connecting and reflecting connect mathematical concepts to each other and to other areas and personal interests. This was the making of the video and seeing if it’s a sustainable career and sustainable for the environment. I would say that overall my video is good I state whether or not it is a viable career option (it is not). I also met the criteria of saying if it’s environmentally friendly.

Overall in this project, I learned how to make an informative video on the value of my time. Also learning how to predict my income over hours and on extension years. Now the answer to the Driving Question: We can predict our finances for the future by using an equation to calculate our expenses and earnings throughout an entire year.

Thanks so much for reading this blog. I will return next year!!
