The Purpose Of A Story: Reflection

I have recently completed a piece of work that I wouldn’t have expected to be assigned in PLP, though I am happy it was. As you may know, for the past couple months Humanities has been revolving the driving question “How do authors use text to teach us more about ourselves?”. The final assignment of this unit was to write an in-class essay about this question. We had to form a thesis statement, drawing on ideas included throughout – for majority of people – our choice book (Don’t Get Caught in my case), Persepolis, and Breakfast Club. When Ms. Maxwell first told us about the essay at the beginning of the unit, I think most people weren’t too happy. I on the other hand was refreshed to know I would be writing an essay, I hadn’t written one in longer than I could remember.

I’ve always like writing for the most part, I’ve always found it as something I end up enjoying more than not. I think my biggest strength when it comes to writing is the way I say things. I really don’t mean to be self-absorbed here, but I’ve definitely noticed that I tend to write in a casual, conversation-like tone. The thing is, that’s not always a good thing, in fact for this essay I couldn’t use that tone. Actually though, now that I’m writing this, I’m not sure if that’s the right way to describe the way I write. I’m not sure how to, I’m struggling to think of a way to put this in to words. Anyways, at least I know!

The most important part of preparing for an essay is engraining your thesis in your head. When I say that I don’t just mean the one or two sentences you’ve put together. I mean thoroughly knowing what your point is. Thinking about what you’re trying to convey to the reader is crucial or you will most likely go off track. I most certainly fell victim to this, I went off track for a few reasons, including this. I think my thesis wasn’t thought out as much as it should have been.

My Essay

I’ll wrap this up by talking about the book one final time. I definitely think my thoughts on Don’t Get Caught helped influence the overall tone and ideation in my essay. I most certainly had a couple connections with the book, and I had an unprecedented experience with it. This whole unit has taught me a lot about literature as a whole, but more importantly it has taught me about how I read and write. Going in to the future I can use this newfound knowledge to help guide me through certain tasks.
