Celebrating Learning

Sharing what we are doing in our classes is a wonderful way to celebrate our learning. We had two distinct sharing sessions today: the Concours d’art oratoire and an African project display.

Concours d’art oratoire

Public speaking is often cited as an activity that many people are afraid to do. The Concours is a French public speaking event for students in grades 6 and 7. This event provides an opportunity for students to face those fears and to demonstrate their oral language French skills.

Yesterday, Our senior classes all shared their speeches in their classes. Students helped to judge their classmates’ speeches according a clear set of criteria. At the end of the day, six grade 6 students and 6 grade 7’s were selected to present to a larger audience today.

The twelve students are once again presenting their speeches, but this time to a larger audience, approximately 160 people. They did an outstanding job, and I was very pleased to hear the confidence in their voices, and how well they answered questions from the judges.

The Concours also provides an opportunity for younger students to hear French spoken by other students. Students in 3 primary classes were present to hear the speeches, as their teachers were acting as judges for the event.

Congratulations to our finalists and congratulations on a job well done.

African a projects

Our English grade 6 & 7 recently completed projects on an African country. Students had to do a fair bit of research on the country of their choice and present the material in a poster form. Students were allowed to include videos as part of their presentation, and some brought in some food items to share. The food was tasty. Thanks

This morning, the students brought their projects to the gym, and then shared what they learned with students in other grades.

Watching students explain to other students what they have learned is another way to celebrate learning. The students were able to articulate key understandings to younger students, and to explain how their country compares to Canada.

Thank you students for all your work this year. It has been an honour to watch you learn and grow over these past 6 months.

Have a great Spring Break and see you in two weeks.

Take care.
