Compassion

Our virtue of the month at L’École Cleveland Elementary School is Compassion. Students are being asked to show compassion by paying attention to others, and helping if they know someone is having trouble. Students are telling us that we can show compassion by:

  • accepting, caring and being nice
  • trying to cheer someone up who is sad
  • being a friend
  • helping people that are in need of help from someone around them
  • show that you care
  • giving to charity
  • loving myself and others
  • wanting to stop the bullying going on around the whole world
  • smiling at people who are sad
  • making people feel better
  • checking to see if they are ok

Teachers are promoting compassion in lessons, and continue to refer back to our previous virtues – Respect, Integrity and Determination. In January we will focus on Determination.

Ask your child about what we are doing to learn about compassion. Check in with your child’s teacher on how you can support the further development of compassion and empathy in your children.

Johnathon Block wrote an excellent blog on Creating More Compassionate Classrooms (via Edutopia). If you know of other good resources on compassion, please share.

Take care
