Back to School

We are back to school today after a two-week spring break. My break was local and relaxing, with lots of photography (one image to the left).

I hope everyone had a good time and the students (and their parents) are ready to get back into the regular routines of school life.

I am looking forward to visiting classes and seeing all the learning and teaching that will be taking place in our classes, our library, our gyms and other spaces. I am also looking forward to many upcoming events. A big event will be the Words in the Woods evening coming up on April 10th. This event is sold out, which means we will have a full house celebrating poetry and creativity.

to nothing. And then, somewhere
an alder leaf fell.

Thanks to parent volunteers and teacher support, we will be starting a km club soon. We will also see our courtyard garden start to grow, and we will spend time on Free the Trees and working on our school’s forest. We have a counted walk in April, as well as a virtue assembly, young Actors, yoga, performance groups visiting and a math contest for grades 4 to 7. We keep busy here. We will also be releasing our chum salmon during this upcoming month.

April will go by quickly.

Music Festivals

“Without music, life would be a mistake.” Friedrich Nietzsche.

I have had the pleasure this year to attend two days of the North Vancouver School District’s band and strings programs.

Thank you students for sharing your musical talents, and thank you to all our band, strings and music teachers who help our students find their musical voice.

The Electronic Project

At Cleveland Elementary, some classes have been allowed to make use of personal electronic devices to support learning and organizing. It has been seen as something that is more suitable for grade 7’s .

Ava, a grade 4 student, has written a persuasive essay arguing for students in all classes to be allowed to bring their own devices. I am sharing her essay with her permission.

The Electronic Project

If schools across the country allowed kids to bring one electronic device to school to help them with their work and to listen to music when working, kids would be happy coming to school. We should have one electronic device on our desk or in our desk during school hours because the people who don’t speak English as well as other children could use the translator on their device to help them understand difficult words like literacy. I also think kids should be listening to music when we are working, and that we can take a picture of the agenda.

Many children in our schools don’t have English as their first language. So if we had an electronic device at school the ELL children (English Language Learners) could use the translator on their device to look up the words that they don’t understand when the teacher is speaking. Another reason is that the ELL children could use the translator when they come across a word when reading that they do not know or understand.

I think kids should be allowed to listen to music when they are working. Listening to music is going to make kids work more because they will be listening to music and not talking to other children. You are probably thinking, “What if kids are listening to explicit music?” Well, I have a solution. Kids would make a playlist with no explicit music and check it over with their teacher or their guardian. If they are listening to explicit music during class time, there will be consequences by the teacher and guardian.

If we were allowed to bring an electronic device to school we could take a picture of the agenda or homework. I know that lots of kids don’t like writing in their homework agenda. But if we could take a picture of the agenda, then everybody would. It only takes seconds. It also saves time, like if you are on a hurry to get your work done.

Since electronics are so useful in our lives, we should be allowed to bring an electronic device to school. Why not let the ELL children use the translator? Why not let us listen to music when we are working? Why not let us take a picture of the agenda? “WHY NOT?”

That is why we should be allowed to have one electronic device at school.

Thanks Ava,

Paradise Valley

This week our grade 6 students are at the North Vancouver Outdoor School in Paradise Valley, near Squamish, British Columbia. I went up on Tuesday to visit.

The students were all doing well. The teachers are too. I saw a lot of happy faces, although a couple of students looked tired. Maybe they will sleep well tonight.

There was a lot of snow on the ground and many good-sized puddles to jump in.

I decided to bring my camera up and take a few shots of interest. Due to privacy regulations, I always check for parental permission before I post images of children on the blog or on the web. As I did not have that information with me, I focused instead on birds, nature or interesting images. I invite you to see a few more shots from Outdoor School on my Instagram page – @dwbeveridge.

PiggieThere were some young piglets (born Feb 23) for the students to see. The goats were active, as were the ducks and geese. The rivers had a lot of gulls, ducks and a few eagles. The crows were making a lot of noise, and the thrushes were flying all around.

We will see our grade 6’s again this Friday. I expect that they will be tired and happy.
