The Father Daughter Dance

Tonight, the school is filled with the sounds of music, laughter and many giggles. it is the night of our annual Father/Daughter Dance.

Once again, this is a wonderful evening for the many fathers and daughters who were able to attend. The music is loud, and every once in a while, I hear a girls voice scream out, “Daddy! I know this song! Come dance!”

There are many mothers here as well, making sure everyone is well fed and has plenty of fluids to keep going until 9:30.

What an incredible evening. I am sure the Mother/Son event will be awesome too.

Paradise Valley

This week our grade 6 students are at the North Vancouver Outdoor School in Paradise Valley, near Squamish, British Columbia. I went up on Tuesday to visit.

The students were all doing well. The teachers are too. I saw a lot of happy faces, although a couple of students looked tired. Maybe they will sleep well tonight.

There was a lot of snow on the ground and many good-sized puddles to jump in.

I decided to bring my camera up and take a few shots of interest. Due to privacy regulations, I always check for parental permission before I post images of children on the blog or on the web. As I did not have that information with me, I focused instead on birds, nature or interesting images. I invite you to see a few more shots from Outdoor School on my Instagram page – @dwbeveridge.

PiggieThere were some young piglets (born Feb 23) for the students to see. The goats were active, as were the ducks and geese. The rivers had a lot of gulls, ducks and a few eagles. The crows were making a lot of noise, and the thrushes were flying all around.

We will see our grade 6’s again this Friday. I expect that they will be tired and happy.

CARE Committee Cares

Our CARE committee has recently announced that they are sponsoring a fundraiser for the Philippines. Two of the committee members have let me have a copy of their first announcements.

“Bonjour. Je m’appelle Duncan, et je m’appelle Tessa. And we are from the CARE Committee.

“We would like to remind you about the loonies drive for the Philippines. As you know, they were his by a typhoon a week ago. They need water, food and medicine. Planes are now able to land in certain areas. That means the Red Cross can get supplies there, so we challenge students to bring a loonie or toonie for our loonie drive here at Cleveland.

“Just think. If everybody contributes, we could raise $500 – $1000 in two weeks.

“So don’t forget your loonies!

“Thank you, and have a magnificent day.”

So, please support our CARE Committee (students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5). They would love to send a big check to the Red Cross.

Grade 3’s at Outdoor School

Last night I was able to visit our grade 3 students at North Vancouver’s Outdoor School. The weather was excellent, and the children were having a great time. I met up with the everyone in the new Environmental Leaning Centre (view from dining area to the left). The students were having a snack after having been outside with teachers doing their afternoon field studies. They were all so excited, especially those who shared with me that they saw a baby goat (born June 3rd).

The students went off to their afternoon activities with their counsellors, while I wandered the grounds after chatting a bit with Mme Baillargeon and M. Amundsen. The teachers report that the students are all doing well.

I visited the new mother and her kid, went for a walk in the forest to find the grade 3’s, and then met up with the students for dinner (pasta and meatballs). The students were all very hungry, and there were no left overs that night. They particularly enjoyed the cupcakes for dessert.

They come home tomorrow, and I think they will be tired.

Below are a few pictures from my afternoon walk.

Take care.

A New Web Site

This week we have launched our new web site. I like it.

Cleveland Elementary School

Why a new web site? The North Vancouver School District is moving to a new system for our online presence. We are working with Sharepoint to create an improved online experience for students, parents and staff. The District will be launching a new web site soon, which I expect in June 2013 (but no promises).

Why do I like this new web site? First – I wrote it ;). Second – I think the navigation is a great improvement over the old web site. Third – students, parents and staff will like the calendar feature, as it will be easier to see what’s is coming up (now students can find out on their own when it is a hot food day). Fourth – the mural picture on the front of the web site are from our inner courtyard, a project that every child in the school helped to create.

There are many more reasons I like the new web site. I see this as a new and improved student handbook. In many schools, staff create a handbook for students and parents with information about the school. Instead of using paper to create a handbook, now I will ask that students and parents to visit the web site in order to; review Code of Conduct expectations, read the Cleveland Dress Code, see a map of where Cleveland is located, or read the library blog. My hope for this new web page is that students, parents and staff can find information they need about our school.

If you’re a parents out there who does not yet send their children to Cleveland Elementary School, visit our web site and learn about what a great school we have. Your kids would love to come here.

Take care.
