Hello and welcome/welcome back, to my blog. Coming up tomorrow is our annual summer exhibition, and we are in the thick of the preparation. We’ve been doing lots of work on finances in our Careers/PGP class for the last while.
We started this [project with an activity called Budgeting Reality. For this activity, we budgeted our spending in a month. This helped us better understand what and where we were spending our money. We looked at our Fixed Expenses (like rent and bills), and Variable Expenses (like eating out and shopping). I work, but I only spend money on food occasionally, so after some estimation, mine was super easy.
Next up was our Financial Future activity. This activity was all about planning for our future careers. We had to research summer jobs and set goals for how much money we wanted to earn. We also looked into the average costs of going to university. It was pretty interesting to see how much money Uni costs.
This was the point in the project when we started working on our stock simulator. This was a simulation that we ran through the entire project which helped us learn about the importance of smart investing and saving money.
Another activity we did while looking at these skills was watching the movie Moneyball. Watching this movie, and the reflection process helped us learn the 5 skills of money management.
Earning
Saving/investing
Borrowing money
Protecting ourselves
Spending
Apart from the financing stuff, we also did this personality test activity. We had to figure out our personality types and understand ourselves better. We even got a friend to take the test for us, thinking how they would answer. Getting the chance to try the test on someone else was super fun too. I did the test pretending to be my buddy Dylan, to see if I would get the same results as he did.
The kind of end goal for this project was to present at PLP’s annual Summer Exhibition. We wanted to present our podcasts, that we’d been making in our Maker class. Using the design and marketing skills we’ve learned this year, we set out to advertise our podcasts and make them presentable.
The exhibition went pretty well, we used our business card making skills to market our podcasts.
Overall, this project was terrific and helped me understand how to support my career choices. I learned that researching options that align with my financial situation is crucial. Budgeting and being smart about my finances are also important. So yeah, that’s how the Financing section in PGP went! Thanks for reading, guys!
