A little while ago our teachers split us into groups and each group chose a local business to create an advertisement for that company. My group was Kira, Noah and Anders. Each group made a list of questions to ask their business, my group made questions to ask A’hoy. After that we set up an interview with our businesses.

After the interview we started our first draft, we all had ideas for the ad all featuring the products but our company did not want us to advertise any of their products. In my first draft I struggled with getting the same colour as the logo to use as the boarder and words. After that I just filled my ad with information that A’hoy said they wanted like listing brands, trying to attract people to Deep Cove and including their website.

After draft one I got some feedback, for example people said that there were too many words. With that feedback, I tried to come up with a good tag line that included the information I had into one sentence but nothing came to mind. Instead for draft two I edited the photo to make it more bright and cheerful and I also made the website and instagram at the bottom into two rows instead of three.

On this draft I experimented with changing the whole format of the ad to see what I could do. After that I tried to simplify it to make it less wordy. I put the image as the background then added a circle in the middle to hold information but I lowered the opacity of the circle so you could still see some of the photo. I added the logo directly in the middle and took out the list of brands and shortened it to great brands.

At this point my class went on a field trip to an advertising company called Pound and Grain. We showed my group member’s ad to Pound and Grain and they told us their thoughts about the ad. We also learned other things like to come up with a bunch of possible ideas and then narrow them down to the best ones. We also learned how they include what they think works well and what the company wants.

For the last draft I tried to put the part where is says great brands in the heart of Deep Cove around just inside the circle but it looked very odd the way it turned out. I did not want to keep those words straight the way it was with a circle so I used a rectangle instead. The last thing that I wanted to change was the logo. Since the logo looked so pixelated I tried to find a better one with no luck. Finally I decided to just type A’hoy instead of using the logo.

After all four drafts and the visit to Pound and Grain I think that I learned a lot about advertising. It is surprising how much their is to consider while creating an ad rather than simply reading one.
