I’m in grade 10 so it should be my third year of mPOLs but it’s actually only my second. My last mPOL was in grade 8. Usually we do them every year but we haven’t because of Covid. This year we are doing them again but online. mPOLs are what we do in PLP instead of parent teacher interviews, they are a 7 minute presentation directed by the student and presented to our teachers and parents. MPOL stands for mid year presentation of learning.

What is an MPOL?

An MPOL is a 7 minute mid year presentation of learning. We present and reflect on our work as learner so far in the year. The presentation is 7 minutes and it is to our teachers, parents, and anyone we want to invite to come. Before we start we also have to make the mpol declaration. “Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

The Bright Party

One good example of my learning was our election project. The Bright Party! In this project we were put into groups of classmates who shared similar political views. Politics have never really made a lot of sense to me but this project was very interesting. In our groups we made our own political party. We had to make a campaign video for our party. I think this video was a really good piece of work. My group worked really well together. When we were out filming we were all sharing ideas on different shots and angles. Everyone was contributing a lot. It was a lot of fun. I think this was a good example of my work and growth so far as I am someone who works really well alone. Group projects are fun but I find them harder to share all my ideas. In this project we were all working together and I think it was really good. I think I did very well in this group project.

The Komagata Maru

The Komagata Maru. This was definitely my favourite project so far this year. We learned about the untold history and truths of Canada. History isn’t my best subject but I enjoy it. It was very sad project learning about hard things people went through but I think it was good that we learned about it. History should never be repeated. We should always learn from the past and grow from mistakes. For this project something I think I showed really well was listening and observation. When we went on the field trips I really enjoyed listening to people talk and also observing and learning from the environment around me. I am a very good observer and visual learner and I think I showed that very well on this project. I learn best Kinesthetic and visually and this project really allowed me to learn in both of those ways.

Growths

Something I’ve been working hard on recently and really want improve on by the end of the year is my reading comprehension and grammar. I’ve always found reading comprehension hard and it usually takes me a couple times to read it before I fully understand it. I really want to improve on this as I think it would be really helpful for me. To help me improve I’ve been trying to read more. I find it hard to read regular chapter books but i really enjoy reading articles and studies online. When I find a topic I’m interested in I’ll find an article on it and read that. I think trying to read more will also help my grammar. My English and grammar have never been that good and an area that I’ve always kind of struggled in. I’m hoping by reading more I will improve my reading comprehension, spelling and grammar.

Zettlekasten

This year we’ve been introduced to the zettlekasten. I think having a zettlekasten has been very helpful when it comes to my learning. Its helped me make connections between subjects and topics. When I find a topic I’m really interested in, or I just learned something new, I’ll make or add to a note in my zettlekasten.
