Destination Imagination Provincials

This is the blog post for the DI provincials the last DI post was about the regionals. So in this post I will tell you what my group (Jason, Luciano, Kyle and me) and I improved and revised, what happened at provincials, what I learned from DI and my overall thoughts about DI.

For our revision process we used these management steps:

1. Recognize

For recognize we tried to recognize what went wrong at regionals. At regionals we thought our projector didn’t work that well, we also thought that we needed to add more cello sound affects and that Jason needed to face the audience.

2. Imagine

For imagine we tried to figure out what we could do about these problems. For the problem with the projector we decided instead to have a solid background. For the cello sound effects we tried to come up with other sound effects I could make on the cello.

3. Initiate and Collaborate

For initiate and collaborate we started to make and to do everything we needed to. We found places to add sound affects for the cello. Jason practiced facing the audience.

4. Assess

For assess we looked at what we had done to see if it was good or if it needed more work. We remembered that we were going to do a physical back drop and we had not done that yet so I took the big piece of cardboard we had used to project on and I took it home and painted it in one night.

Then we had DI provincials at Johnston Heights Secondary school. We had to get all of our stuff there by 8:30 in the morning on a Saturday. For most of the day we just hung out and we did our instant challenge which I thought went pretty well. Then we had our team challenge but right before they said that both of our team choice elements overlapped with another part of the challenge so we had to tell them which cello sounds were representing the location and which were the team choice element, We had to change our other team choice element to our costumes. Despite that I think it went quite well.

5. Evaluate and Celebrate!

We tied for third place for our challenge.

I think DI was a lot of fun because you get to do it with your friends and be on a team with them. You also learn a lot by making things and learning how to do new things that you hadn’t done before. You learn real world skills that you can apply to real work situations. There is a good article on the DI website that shows how DI helps you. I think I would do DI again because its a great learning experience and you get to learn with friends and do real world stuff.
