For our first field study in PLP we went to the Oregon coast for our advertising unit. To leave for Oregon we had to be there at 6:00am. Which meant I had to get up at 5:00am to get ready and everything and when I got there it was still dark.

Once every one was there we headed off to the border. After we crossed the border we drove for about two hours through Washington until we got to Panera Bread for a snack. I had a cinnamon bun, it was really good.

While we were in Washington we stopped at Cabela’s. Cabela’s is a huge store with a big mountain in it and the mountain is covered in animals. It also has an aquarium under the mountain. We were told to take a photo of ourselves imitating one of the animals.

After Cabela’s we drove another 2 hours and 30 minutes to the Astoria Column. We got to climb all the way up it which was 125 feet.

Then we drove to the wreck of the Peter Iredale and I took some amazing photos.

On the second day of our field study we went to the most northerly point of Oregon.

Then we headed to Fort Stevens which is a military base. Fort Stevens was made for the civil war but was finished when the war was over. It was then used for the First World War and the Second World War, by then it had lots of batteries which are two or more artillery guns. But during all of fort Steven’s life it never once fired at anyone.

Next we went zip lining at High Life Adventures which was super fun and a little scary at first because I’m a little scared of heights but it got better the more I did it. We also had nicknames on our helmets that our guides called us, mine was Sugar. On the second to last zip line we were dunked in the lake, we were able to chose how wet we got. I chose the super soaker, I went all the way up to my waist and then got scared by the Sasquatch.

The next day of our trip the first thing we did was go to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. One of the big things we learned there was how dangerous the mouth of the Columbia River is, they called it the grave yard of the pacific. In the museum there were a bunch of maps that the colonists would have used, I thought they were really cool.

We then drove one hour to Cannon Beach which has a bunch of monoliths. it also has the third largest monolith in the world: haystack rock which is the big rock in the movie the Goonies.

After Cannon Beach we drove to Tillamook Cheese Factory to walk around and try cheese. I bought lots of cow stuff since cows are my favourite animals.

The next day we first went to the Oregon Coast Aquarium which was full of really cool animals and sea life. They also had a really cool shark tunnel which was a domed tunnel that went through a shark tank. I also took lots of good pictures of animals here too.

After that we went to the Hatfield Marine Science Centre. The first thing we did was do an experiment with crabs about how fast they could go. Then we went outside to the estuary to do some shrimp slurping.

On our fifth day, we again went to the Hatfield Marine Science Centre. The first thing we did was make a R.O.V. (Remote operated vehicle) out of PVC pipes and motors. Then we tested them in big tanks of water. We then went into the visitors centre which had lots of really cool stuff. It had a tsunami machine that you build a structure out of lego in it, then you tested it against a tsunami. They also had a really really cool topographic sand table where a computer projected a topographical map on to the sand and you could change the landscape.

Then we went on the Marine Discovery Cruise which was the business my group and I were advertising for. We went from the dock to the estuary and put out a net and trolled for sea life. When they brought the net back up we look at what we’d caught. We had caught a squid, some crabs, some weird egg things that no one could identify, some other sea life and a lot of seaweed. Then we went out to sea and saw lots of whales.

The next day we first went to Yaquina head. Then we went to Depoe Bay which is the smallest harbour in the world and we also saw whales there.

We then drove two hours to Portland and to the Audubon Society. When we got there we went for a walk while our guide talked about the land and let us touch stinging nettle. Then we went for a night walk in the dark and tested how our eyes could see in the dark.

The next morning we woke up at the Audubon and had breakfast. We then got ready for the long drive home.

Going on this field study has been one of the best experiences of my life and I’m really looking forward to the next one.
