In this post I will be reflecting on our final ad, and telling you about rest of this project since my mid-project reflection post. This post will make the most sense if you read the previous post first. Please click here to read it. I will also answer our driving question.
Okay, starting where we left off from the last post:
My group went to Covert Cafe and got some photos for our ad. Then it was time to combine all of my group member’s individual ad layouts and styles together into one draft. At this point we ran into a bit of a problem: we all had our own ideas of how to make it. After arguing for a good portion of the class and chatting through iMessage, we boiled it down to two ideas, then sent them to Paul who gave some very helpful feedback and provided some logos for us to use.
⬇️Here is what we sent to Paul⬇️
I then had a flash of inspiration and created our semi-final draft. We also added their Vancouver Foodster 1st place award to the ad.⬇️ Here is what I created after receiving his feedback. ⬇️
Then we met with a classmate’s dad, Derek Hepburn, who is creative director via Zoom. He gave feedback on all of the group’s ads. Using his suggestions we made the copy bigger and decided to only advertise the cinnamon buns.
⬇️ Here is our final ad ⬇️
⬇️ We sent our ad off to Paul and here is what he thought of it ⬇️
🥳 SUCCESS!
I like how our ad mixes the logo and the message (Covert Cafe sells the best cinnamon buns on the shore) together. The copy “The shore’s best cinnamon buns” uses the techniques ‘we’re different and unique’ claim and weasel words. Our ad uses the emotional security and well-being appeal by showing a delicious cinnamon bun and calm ocean in the background. I like how our info bar at the bottom has little icons beside the corresponding information. I don’t like the angle of the photo and the cinnamon bun in the photo does not look appealing to me. I also don’t like how far away the apostrophe is from the rest of the copy. If I had the option to make the ad again I would try taking a different picture, and maybe have a person in it… Overall I am quite satisfied with our final ad. I really enjoyed getting to learn all about how to make a professional advertisement! I would be interested to know how the ad would have turned out if I was with a group of classmates that share more similar values and have similar ideas on how to do things. Now every time I see an advertisement I start analyzing it for Pathos, Ethos and Logos!
We got the wonderful privilege to meet with an Apple marketing employee. She told us all about the work she does. I learned so much from her, too much to tell in this post. I found it especially interesting that Apple has a whole team just to design the amount of resistance there is when you try to take the lid off the box containing your product! I also learned from Mr. Hughes afterwards that every Apple store in the world has the same type of floor that comes from a place in Italy, so that no other store’s floor will be the same as Apple’s! During the meeting with the Apple employee, we took notes using a protocol called Connect – extend – challenge. This protocol didn’t work for me very well. I find it very difficult to take notes on what I see and hear, think and pay attention to the presenter all at the same time. ⬇️ Here is what my sheet looked like ⬇️
Now to try and answer our driving question:
I think that what we hear, read and see can influence us in many ways. Print advertisements can use pathos, ethos or logos to influence us into buying the advertiser’s products. Audio or video advertisements can do the same thing using slightly different ways of getting their message across. We can also be influenced by books or articles that we read, for example, you might read a book about how bad a certain food is, you might be influenced into not eating that food anymore. You could be influenced by a documentary or TV show as well. We are influenced because companies and organizations use carefully thought out techniques so that you want to buy their products or change your opinions or beliefs. We are also influenced by other groups styles and ways of life, for example, if everyone in your program (including your friends) were wearing ripped jeans, then you may be influenced into also wearing ripped jeans. No matter where you live, were you work, where you learn, where you go, you are constantly being influenced by something.
That’s all for humanities and maker until February. Next up… Scimatics!
This post shows GREAT evidence of your learning Fraser, and is good continuation of your mid-way post. Always love ending with a star, wish, think (I definitely want a cinnamon bun now too!)
