🕙 Fractions of Your Time

Our first Scimatics project! This project was about how much (what fraction of) our time we spend on screens. Before reading this post, please visit my previous post on this project.

The rest of this project was just worksheets and a few quizzes. Every day we added our amounts of time for each activity to our tables, and added more pie charts.

Each project in PLP is based on curricular competencies set by the government of Canada. The three competencies for this project (chosen by Mr. Gross) were:

Applying and Innovating: Contribute to care for self, others, community, and world through individual or collaborative approaches. I completed this competency by caring for my own education by asking to move to a table with a non-distracting classmate, Clare. This also helped care for the education of Clare because she was being distracted by the person who she was sitting beside before I moved. I also was able to care for myself by tracking my screen time, enabling me to decide if the amount of time I spend on screens and other activities is healthy. The skills I gained from this project may benefit me and others in the future.

Understanding and solving: Visualize to explore mathematical concepts. I exceeded in this competency by creating a table and pie charts that used math concepts like fractions, averages and percents. I also kept track of various non-screen activities. ⬇️ Here is my spreadsheet ⬇️

Communicating and Representing: Represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial, and symbolic forms. I created multiple pie charts to visually represent my time spent on screens and other non-screen activities. I could also estimate what fraction of time I spend on which activities by looking at the pie charts. For example the first blue pie chart (below) shows that I spend about one sixth of my time on screens. I extended on this project by adding two bar graphs to compare screen time and other activities each day. ⬇️ Here are my pie charts and bar graphs ⬇️

At the end of this project we presented our charts and table to the class. I learned that I come in second for least amount of screen time! I spend two percent more time on screens than Teva (I was not surprised). I was honestly shocked by the amount of screen time some of my other classmates have.

I enjoyed this project, and am fairly happy about how little time I spend on screens. I do wish I could spend a bit more time outdoors though. Next up… Tectonic Chances! 🌎
