💎 mPOL • Jan 2022

Welcome!

In this post I will be writing about my growth as a learner so far this year. I will then be presenting this post to my parents and Ms. Maxwell in what we in PLP call an mPOL – Midyear Presentation of Learning – while I talk about my growth as a leaner and how I can sharpen my learning plan so I can meet my academic goals by the end of the year.

mPOL Declaration

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

Learning Plan

At the start of the year we created individualized Learning Plans to set goals for our academic success. I’m going to be mainly focusing on the Core Competencies for this mPOL.

Humanities

Revolutions on Trial
I feel that this project really helped me develop my ability to communicate confidently, using forms and strategies that show attention to my audience and purpose as well as thinking “outside the box” to get innovative ideas and persevere to develop them. I was able to work on my communication because we created a theatre like presentation of a court trial that required me to speak with confidence and to the audience.

I also created several graphic organizers for this project. I am particularly proud of the clean and visually pleasing Crane Brinton Diagram and the mini Instagram profiles for my graphic organizer, which I think demonstrated by ability to think “outside the box”

Working With Words
I found this project extremely challenging. From not enough time to complete assignments to having to write poetry connecting specifically to worldview. However I do think that I developed my positive personal and cultural identity: “I understand that my identity is influenced by many aspects of my life. I am aware that my values shape my choices and contribute to making me a unique individual.” I also think I demonstrated my personal awareness and responsibility: “I recognize my value and advocate for my rights. I take responsibility for my choices, my actions and my achievements.”

I wrote 10 poems about several aspects of my worldview. Although I didn’t enjoy most of the poetry writing process, I feel that the poetry did help me think about and recognize my values, beliefs and cultural identity. I feel that my Experience Poem and my Found Poem are excellent at presenting my values and beliefs.

As for personal awareness, I was able to realize how burnt out I was due to the overwhelming amount of assignments and quickly approaching deadlines. I spent my whole weekend on assignments and had no time to spend on fun and I felt hardly any joy and happiness the entire weekend (with the exception of a Lifeguarding/Swimming Instructor course, which was fun and made me happy). This is mostly my fault as I tend to set expectations so high for myself that I don’t have the time or energy to reach them. I wrote about my burnout in my poem “Done.”

Scimatics

Correlation vs. Causation
I really learned a lot in this project, from the math of correlation and causation, the differences between the two, as well as the formatting of surveys for answers that can be used for statistics. I believe that in this project I developed more on my ability to think critically, evaluate and use well-chosen evidence to develop interpretations; identify alternatives, perspectives and implications and make judgements. I can examine and adjust my thinking as well as collaborating, facilitating group processes and encourage collective responsibility for our progress. Makenna and I didn’t think out our questions for our survey very well so when we got the responses we quickly realized that we needed numerical answers.

Because of this we had to think critically to find rating systems to turn text data into numerical data. We were also able to share responsibility for our progress and completion of the project. I also continued to develop my communication skills in the video we made.

How can I sharpen my Learning Plan to ensure I will reach my learning targets by the end
of this school year?

I think that I can still work towards a Personal Awareness and Responsibilities Profile 5 “I recognize my value and advocate for my rights. I take responsibility for my choices, my actions, and my achievements.

In particular “I use strategies for working toward a healthy and balanced lifestyle, for dealing with emotional challenges, and for finding peace in stressful times. I know how to find the social support I need.”

To achieve this, I can keep track of how much time I spend on each assignment, make choices on when to spend time on my personal health and well-being and communicate with teachers about expectations for quality and time spent on assignments. I can seek out resources from school counsellors.

Thank You!
