Growth Mindset unit
During the growth mindset we learnt about well… Growth Mindsets, Fixed Mindsets, The importance of failure, the result of perseverance and multiple other subjects having to do with different types of mindsets.
Some of the more important things I learnt through our Growth Mindset unit.
What stood out for me the most in our Growth Mindset course was the reflections we would write after watching videos or discussing something in class. It helped me reflect on the things I had learnt and on my life in general. One of my favorite assignments was the paragraph we had to write about our idols and why we thought they demonstrated Growth Mindsets.
Another assignment I enjoyed was the Growth Mindset paragraph.
One particular video that stood out to me was The Chris Hadfield Video (Chris Hadfield is a famous Canadian astronaut) talked about Long-Term goals. The thing he said that really stuck with me was: “It is important to set long term goals but it is also important to stop and smell the roses.” Something along those lines. The exact wording is not important, the messsage, however, is.
The Selfie Project.
My class and I all had to complete this project called The Selfie Project. We first had to set a goal that would be realistically completable by the end of the year, keeping in mind all the stuff we had learnt about Growth and Fixed Mindsets and having to do with our school work. For example mine was: “I want to face my fear of mathematics. So that I can become comfortable with being uncomfortable.”
The second step of The Selfie Project was to take a picture or selfie of us and then arrange our quote/goal onto the picture. So far I have two draft of my selfies.
Fixed Mindsets vs. Growth Mindsets
The Growth Mindsets and Fixed Mindsets were a big part of the unit (by the name of the unit it is obvious). Growth Mindsets allow you to move forwards with more ease, succeed, learn perseverance, work harder, etc. People with Growth Mindsets welcome criticism and accept the fact that failure is a bump on the road the opposite is true for people with Fixed Mindsets. Fixed Mindsets are akin to chains, they hold you back. In numerous videos that my class and I watched there have been studies done where links have been shown between the success rate of people with Growth Mindsets and the success rate of people with Fixed Mindsets.
What I thought about this unit.
I enjoyed this unit because I found that it helped me reflect on my mindset and it also helped me reflect on my outlook in general. I struggled a bit with some of the self reflections we had to because it was hard for me to go that deep and really think about it.
