My Haiku for Alberta
There were many friends
They voyaged to Alberta
Some strange things happened…
Because of that amazing Haiku, you should keep reading this post to find out just exactly what made this trip strange and wonderful.
We left from Vancouver on the 16th of September. We came back on the 24th. But there is much that happened in between.
As I said we started in the Vancouver. We went through the Rockies and to Calgary. As we set out on our voyage we were supposed to answer a question about identity. We also worked a lot on our video skills while on the trip. KEEP ON READING!
The way there
The first place we made a video and our first stop was in the Three Valley Gap ghost town. It had to be a silent movie and before filming this movie we had to create a storyboard to plan out the angles of the camera, our costumes, our plot, etc… My team mates were: Amelia, Luc and Kiera. We played our characters basically as ourselves. It was slightly jarring not being able to talk during the video. It was a lot of fun! I’m really passionate about old vintage things so I enjoyed filming in an “abandoned” ghost town.
Another notable stop on the way was the northern lights wildlife center. We learnt much about the wolves they had there. And I interview a worker there named Gigi, for my identity Video. She’s was really nice and had interesting insights about the wolves there. You should listen to her in the video.
We learnt that wolves in Canada are very much endangered. The reason that wolves are so close to extinction is that the Canadian government thought that in order to protect certain endangered caribou they would kill off many wolves to stop them from eating the caribou, that’s not working to well for them. If you want to help, go to this website.
The Rockies
While in the Rockies we saw many really cool things. We went to Lake Louise and a bunch of other glacial water lakes. Also I’m pretty sure I froze my fingers off at least twice, it was very cold.
We also went on a boat cruise around Lake Minnewaka. They told us that there has once been a sea monster in the water there (!!!). Turns out the guy who owned the boat cruise agency ordered a fake monster made of plaster and pretended that they had captured it. Just a fun fact there for ya. Even though the monster was fake, I don’t think I’ll be going swimming there.
However, the main highlight of our time in the Rockies was going to the Columbia ice field. It was astoundingly beautiful. We had a bit of a photo shoot session during our time on the glacier. If you want to read about it click here.
Calgary:
A lot of stuff we did in Alberta was related to Beakerhead. Which you can read about below. One day we went to the Calgary zoo. That was a lot of fun. We learnt about the animals they had in captivity there. We got a shot of the panda, which is lucky because apparently the pandas never comes out, they eat and sleep all day (so jealous). I think pandas are the cutest things on this planet, so personally I was ecstatic.
We did go to the royal Tyrell museum. It’s a huge museum all about dinosaurs. I learnt about the various species of dinosaurs they had at the museum, for example I learnt about a kind of dinosaur that had a bump on its head made for fighting other male dinosaurs of that species. And I made a video about the dinosaurs, it was the sequel of GAB AND HER LAB, a science tv show I created in Grade 8.
Beakerhead:
While in Calgary we went to a science and arts festival called Beakerhead. During Beakerhead there are many “beacons” that will pop up around Calgary, these beacons can be anything from a statue of a giant beetle to a burning statue of a robot. (The photo below is proof that we legitimately saw a statue of a giant beetle)
We went to a couple really cool beacons, like the little street festival that had a place where you could pain on this gel with bacteria and then they would cultivate the bacteria and it would become a painting. We also ,for example, ran on this weird substance called oobleck. It’s altogether a really wacky festival 😂.
The last part of Beakerhead is something called Beakernight. A bunch of displays will gather together in one giant field in Calgary. We even saw a fashion show with tech infused clothing. And a bike that you could ride and it would power a stereo system.
Overall Beakerhead was a really cool and eye opening experience. We really did learn a lot of peoples creative process and how the made the things they did.
The way home
One of the most fascinating spots to visit was a buffalo ranch in Golden.
It was really amazing seeing these majestic animals, We talked to the owner of the Buffalo Ranch, a man named Leo Downey, we interview him for our identity Video, click here to read about it and watch it. Leo Downey is a very interesting man, who has had a very interesting life. The buffalos were a bit stinky but still neat.
We had one last stop. That was the enchanted forest. It’s a sort of amusement park without rides, it’s basically a section of forest filled with magical looking statues. It was kinda creepy, since it seemed like at the statues were watching us. And we had to make another video there. As usual, we had to make a story board depicting our events. My teammates were Izzy, Nik and Jason. Izzy was my daughter and Nik was my husband. I did not like having Nik as my husband. I would like to get a divorced, Go below to watch it.
Conclusion:
My thoughts on this trip is that it was highly educational and I got so many amazing learning experiences. As well as just having fun. If you’re ever in Calgary around beaker head time I would really recommend going to see some of the beacons. It was an amazing experience, I made new friends and learnt new things. I really loved it. That’s it for today folks. Be ready for the next post.
