Resumes, emails and business cards 🪪

This wraps up our first careers ‘project’.

today we submitted our last keystone for our project “Marketing you‼️”. This project was pretty much your average high schoolers careers course material. We covered; future career opportunities , how to make a solid resume, how to crate business cards and how to act and respond in a professional interview.

Work opportunities:

We stared with cratering a mind map (in normal PLP fashion). Within that mind map we had two main branches “realistic” and “ideal” and from those main branches you would attach around 2 possible careers that would find into either ideal (a dream job) or realistic (jobs you could easily pursue with enough effort) and then within those “twigs” you would take three more mini branches for each job possibly. You would have one branch that was titled “choices” and one branch titled “decisions” and then the last one would be “road blocks”.

Once your mind map was appropriately formatted you would fill it in. You would insert possible decisions purposed to you throughout said career, input some choices you’d have to make undertaking that career and some potential road blocks.

I am very grateful for an experience I got to have during this project (by coincidence). I got to go down to Vancouver for the “Youth Outreach Academy”. Boy was is absolutely fantastic!

Youth academy grad class of 2023 (all 22 of us)

We learn so much, like a crazy amount of stuff.

Things we/i learned;

  • how to open and close a fire hydrant
  • where everything is on the rigs (fire truck)
  • how to hook up a nozzle to a hose
  • how to march
  • Get our CRP level – C certification (even though it’s like my third time getting it this year)
  • how to properly use a fire extinguisher
  • the different types of fire extinguishers
  • What all thr gear feels like
  • how SCBA’s (Self-contained breathing apparatus) work
  • and what to do when your walking into a burning building
  • next steps in my firefighting career

as you can see we learned lots, and I had so many great opportunities to talk to some really cool firefighters about how they got to become a firefighter, what did they do before, what they did after high school and what mindset I should have going into the field of firefighting.

we were on the news!!

The resume:

Creating a resume custom to you can your experience was our first keystone. Regardless of wether you had a fully completed resume before this or you’ve never even thought of making one we all came out with a new/well revised resume reading to hand out to potential employers.

In this case I did have a resume before, but it wasn’t very strong and didn’t really reflect any of me.

before:

During:

after lots of revision I ended With two similar, revised and edited resumes.

Changes:

  • layout
  • more concise certifications
  • professional photo
  • added objective
  • narrowed down work experience
  • added skills

business cards:

We stared with a business card into. We learned what makes a good business card and what makes a bad business card.

And first we made funny ones of course.

and then we made serious ones

Back

And last but not least:

the interview

As a lot of us knew already (from going to job interviews in the past), job interviews are a big part about getting a job.

we learned: what attire to wear to look professional, learned how to act, how to appropriately respond and how to act accordingly when going in to a job interview

we had an opportunity to curate 5 questions we were going top be asked during your ‘mock interview’ and then think of an in-depth answers.

As you may notice there are only 3 questions. That’s because until the day o filling I was fully convinced we only needed 3, turns out I was wrong.

In the end I ended up thinking on 2 more questions on the fly and kind of just using the already curated answers more as quiz lines.

Finally it was finally edited and the bloopers were at the end…

Once the interviews were complete, we were pretty much done our ‘marketing you unit… but far from over.

as we wrap up our marketing up segment we are swinging right into our ‘financing you segment’!

Financing you blog post coming soon ‼️…
