Hi and welcome back to one of the last blog posts of the year!! While this project comes to an end, we still have TPOLs and one final BCFP reflection but this ones all about our Holocaust unit.
We began this project way back in the beginning of May.
It all stared with a free write about how stories are an effective way to learn.
Afterward, we watch a clip from the band of brothers and researched some quotes from Ms.Madsen. With that we added our new found information to our free write paragraph
After our first “keystone” we went into many lectures.
We spent countless classes leaning about; the rise of nazism, a few new vocabulary words, and every last detail of the Holocaust, plus a symposium.
Approaching the holocausts is a very sensitive and touchy issue. To get more of an insight on the personal stories that came out of the holocaust, we watched testimonies, looked at many photos as well as read the famous graphic novel, Maus.
While reading Maus we were introduced the different lenses of “literary critique” as well as the idea of a thesis statement.
We focused on three different lenses to read the book through.
Suggested Process for Criticism Using Literary Elements:
- Identity
- Look for connections
- Interpret
- Construct interpretations
2. Compare – contrast
You could:
- Analysis two different authors
- Analysis two different characters
- Analysis two works (same theme)
- Make lists for each characters/author and compare and contrast them side by side
3. Critical literature analysis
- Gender dynamics
- Historical
- Social
- Moral
- Post-colonial
Creating a theme and thesis statement was the first step to our essay creation
Then we got really into the art of MLA citation and what an important skill it is to bring into our post-secondary careers.
Then we were let loose to write our essays, it look a long time! But it did it. We had to focus on one literary critique lenses and make sure we provided strong evidence from both the book and at least one reliable outside/secondary source
For my essay I chose to focus on the critical literature analysis. While it was quite challenging, and after countless hours of editing and applying feedback, I got this!!
Hope you like it and learned something new
