Very Reactive ‘Round the World

What is a chemical reaction? Well, that question will be answered within this post, supported by a video and in class labs. To begin with the basics, we made sure that we knew all 6 of the chemical reactions.

Acid base neutralization

Combustion

Single replacement

Double replacement

Synthesis

Decomposition

With this small amount of prior knowledge, we created a list of questions around this topic to start off our inquiry.

My group, (Emily and Logan) decided to focus on combustion reactions, and how combustion reactions are found in everyday life. We found, that the most prominent example was the worlds change in climate and what humans are doing to create it.

One of the important parts of this project was the evaluation rubric that we created together, because this chart would guide our entire project and how we were going to be graded on it. My group and I made sure to take a class to decide which competencies would work best for our project and what parts we could make the best.

After getting our outline in order it was time to create! I drew out a basic storyboard of some of the important shots we needed to get, while Emily and Logan got our experiment organized.

We represented the change of climate through three “greenhouses”, one with oxygen, one C02 and one with Methane. All with thermometers and a large lamp to act as the sun. Inside of the “greenhouses”, one ice cube was placed inside. This experiment was supposed to show with chemicals melted the ice cube faster, to show the effect that greenhouse gases have on the world.

Throughout this experiment we filmed the process and Emily wrote a script to guide the message that our video would portray. Our final video explains the project more in depth and how you can help prevent the damage to our planet.
