For this blog post I am going delve deeper into steampunk and find the answer to my question of “where does steampunk originate and where is it going?”.
Steampunk has been around for not so long. It started back in 1960-1979 with books however the genre was only called steampunk in the 1980s.
Steampunk is a sub genre which is normally set in an alternative version of the 1900s where everything is powered by steam. It also has a very big Victorian era theme with characters locations and many other things revolving around that point. This leads to a big focus around the machines and a lot of the time these steam powered machines have exposed gears and are really the opposite of today’s small, compact and wireless electronics. We are currently reading leviathan in class to learn about the genre
The genre was popularized with books however now, while there are still books there is also a large amount of photos and costumes that capture the style. It’s also growing in popularity as well as different forms of media. There are many fans of this genre and they often host conventions for people to meet and show off their designs.
While the current writing is still mostly the same style to what it used to be, it is mass producing new forms of media and is filling up all the differencent outlets for fans to view and share such things. I think that steampunks current way of expanding it’s genre will only make it grow even more popular with people as more and more see it.
So I hope that answers my question of “where does steampunk originate and where is it going?” I just finished term one and I am very excited to start my second term this year.
