For our first trip of PLP ten (because we get two this year) we went to Seattle to further learn about our driving question for that unit “why does it take a crazy person to change the world”.

I was excited for this trip because we hadn’t done a trip in a while and we had to sit out for the majority of the first term while all of the other grades went on their trips. So when December finally rolled around and we had already been well into our project we were given the assignment for the trip.

We were tasked with making a video on three “crazy” people who’s corporations were in the city and make our own thesis statement about them. My group consisting of Lucas, Emily and I chose to theme our video around the question of What is needed in society in order to change the world. The three people we chose were Daniel Myers, Jeff Bezos and Pete Carroll. We all chose them for different reasons but they all had something in common, they fit our category for “crazy” people.

When it actually came down to filming the video we all had to collect footage but we had Lucas do most of the filming because he had an actual camera compared to me and Emilys IPad cams. We needed a lot of footage because we were going to cover a large amount of different locations.

The Seattle trip was quite long and had many stops along the way which were all very educational and/or fun. A few of my favourites which I would like to point out here are the Starbucks offices, MoPop and Ifly. The offices at Starbucks were fun because I got to have a very nice reserve coffee and a baked meal to wake me up and it was really cool seeing all of the different machines and advancements to make better coffee as someone who really enjoys coffee.

MoPop was a very interesting type of museums and had a bunch of different exhibits about music, Tv and even video games. Finally, Ifly was a blast because I got to experience what actual skydiving would feel like without, you know, actually jumping out of a plane thousands of feat above the ground and relying on a parachute for my safety.

The food was also great and I’ll probably make a blog post on how good all the PLP trip food is at some point before I graduate. The video was finished rather recently and I would recommend watching it as it is really well edited and detailed about our driving question.

I also think that I learned quite a bit from this project in terms of filming. We had the entire trip to film but we went in not knowing specifically we needed to film as we didn’t really have a finalized script at the time. Knowing that I spent a lot more time thinking of each possible shot while we were out walking. Car rides turned into time lapses and walking down the street turned into recording everything that I saw as remotely as I tried to figure how to get the best angles whilst also not falling behind the group. It was actually a great way to pass the time and I do think it imoroved my filing skills.
