At the beginning of every school year at Seycove secondary school, the grade 8 students of PLP go on a fun-filled, knowledge packed, trip to the beautiful Oregon Coast. Although, our teachers were very clear this wasn’t a vacation, it was a “field study” meant for learning purposes and to build our learning of advertising. Sitting on a bus for at least 2 hours at a time with a bunch of teenagers will help you get closer with people, trust me, I would know. But in the end, the trip was just all about fun and bonding, and a little bit of work as well. We went to amazing historic areas, beaches, and tourist attractions. We also went to spectacular restaurants with delicious food, by far one of the best parts was the coconut chicken curry at Nisa’s Thai, and camped out at an awesome KOA and in yurts.Well, anyway if you want to see the full itinerary of the field school click here!

While we were away, we had two projects to do. One of them was to make a book/ journal of the whole trip and all the fun things we did. This book was used to document the places we went, things we saw, and things we learned. There are even a few of my very own amazing illustrations in it, warning I am not the greatest artist! If you would like to read my book it is right below:

I really enjoyed making the book, it gave us something to do while we were sitting on the bus or just sitting in our yurts and cabins. The other project we worked on was our Advertising project. In this project, what we had to do, was organize a meeting with a business in Oregon and talk to them about ads we could design fro them. Although, we had a little issue with this part of the project. With the information we got from our “meeting” we each made our own ads and then sent them to the person we talked to, once we finished. Something else we focused a lot on was a book we had read before we went to Oregon. This book is called The Highest Tide. I really enjoyed reading this book since the main character was a 13 year old. Although, he was a boy, so there were a few weird parts. The point of reading this book was to make a chart about all the intertidal life Miles ( the main character ) mentioned and then once we got to Oregon we had to try and take a picture of every animal on the chart.

Oh, also one more thing, I wanted to tell you one of my highlights. Well, this is going to sound ridiculous but, I loved our adventures in Costco and Fred Meyer. Twice through out the trip our teachers had to stop and pick up some breakfast food and they actually let us come in with them, all twenty of us. The people working were probably wondering why there were a bunch of teenagers sliding around the floor in their rain boots and taking a bunch of pictures. But we didn’t care about the funny glares, we were having a blast.

So, overall this was actually was probably one of the best trips (“field studies”) I have actually ever been on. I made new friends and became closer with others, I learned so much about……. everything, and now I have amazing memories that I will never forget. I think we really benefited from this field study and it definitely helped us on our advertising unit. Thank you so much teachers for taking us on such an amazing journey and I hope we will have many more that are equally as fantastic.
