Poetry is haarrrrd;
That’s one thing I learned in our most recent humanities project:
“Humanities: Manatees” or no “Working with Words“ it’s alliteration not rhyme.
The poems in this project took awhile to make, it was an arduous process of guessing words till they sounded good together, sorta like how I write music. Noticed I used a simile there, no, well it wasn’t that good anyway.
My favorite poem I wrote was “Skipping stones won’t break your bones,” a “sound poem” which I thought would be ridiculously hard but was actually fairly easy. The thing is… I only had 9 lines… and I needed 10… so…hence the final lime which inspired the title:
Skipping stones won’t break your bones, but gunshots will always hurt you
Ploop
Ptshw
Yakakak

Plooppupupupup
Woohoo!
Ptshw
Ploop
Bang! Bang! Thump.
So i guess I learnt that it was not just possible but kinda even fun to write these sound poems.
The simile was also kinda fun to write, and the haikus were fairly easy, we did a thing in class where someone wrote a haiku 4,6,4 instead of 5,7,5 and we had to fix it
I loathe haiku
Counting the syllables
Five seven five
And I think we missed an opportunity for 6,8,6
I hate writing haikus
Only counting some syllables
Five then seven then five
I find it is sometimes quite funny messing with poems and seeing what you come up with, that being said some of the more introspective poems were quite challenging.
Now to answer the driving question of this project:
How might I construct text that shows who I am right now?
With a lot of freaking work!
