Hello and welcome to my blog, this post is all about my most recent project in humanities the Great War. In this project we strived to understand how exploring stories and text can help us understand how the impact of WW1 effected Canada’s identity.
To begin we had to start at the beginning and take a look at how the Great War commenced.
The first activity we did to begin this project was all about the chain of friendship. We learned about how one action can effect a long chain of people, just like what caused WW1 to begin.
This was a really cool activity that got me really interested in the topic. It was also a good way to understand where each side was coming from, and what their perspectives were.
Next we looked at some more specific perspectives. For the second activity we did some research on a specific Canadian soldier. I researched Harry Colebourn a Canadian veterinarian who worked in France during the Great War.
Learning about Harry Colebourn got me thinking more about what soldiers thought about the war, and had me questioning whether they had the same perspective as the country they represented.
We then chose a topic to research and write about for our very own book about WW1. I chose shell shock. I researched how people reacted to the large number of cases due to WW1 and learned how some country’s avoided the issue and sort of hid it away. While some began treating and researching the psychological condition.
Reading about how people handled shell shock during WW1 gave me a lot of insight into various peoples perspectives during that time. I learned about how shell shock was a sort of game changer in the world of mental illness , and that without the immense amount of cases researchers might have not looked into how to treat patients. Researching and writing about my topic also helped me become better at comprehending a topic on my own, and I was able to work on my ability of building understanding.
Throughout this time I was also reading a book about someone living during the Great War. I read about Private Peaceful. Each week we also did an activity for that section of the book here are my favourite activities I completed.
Reading private peaceful answered some questions I had after researching Harry Colebourn. I got a better understanding of what individual soldiers perspectives were. Reading this book I also realized some countries perspectives based on how other people treated the main character, specifically how people at home pressured him and how his country viewed him and other soldiers as a small price to pay.
While finishing up Private peaceful I was working on my own part of our book. I took all my research and wrote about shell shock and my soldier Harry Colebourn. I also wrote a special page about shell shock today, heres how my work turned out.
Writing about my topics was really interesting because I had read about all this information and tried my best to understand the perspectives during that time, and then I was able to demonstrate my comprehension of my topics.
After a little editing my book pages were ready to be added to our class WW1 book.
