Winter Exhibition 2016

On December 14th, my class hosted a winter exhibition. The first thing that we had to do is find out what our theme is. Our theme was ‘the environment’. The next thing we did was to brainstorm ideas for categories on the environment. After that, we got assigned a category, and my category was global warming. For my project, I decided to narrow my focus to Deep Cove. I came up with the question: ‘What effects of global warming can we see in Deep Cove, and how can we fix it?’
At first, I decided to make a model entirely out of clay. After doing so, I realized that it was too easy and simple, and wouldn’t attract a lot of people. To improve the model, I came up with the idea to do a demonstration of what is happening with global warming. I made a model of Panorama Park in Deep Cove using beach sand from the beach at Panorama Park, and a large rock to represent an Arctic glacier. I also made clay houses and trees using branches.

I started building my model by placing the rock in the container using clay to make the top of the rock flat. The next thing I did was make the shore. I stuck sand to clay to prevent it from moving all over the place. Then I started to make the houses. I made boxes out of grey clay, then wrapped them in colourful clay. To complete the houses I made the windows and a door. I made a jetty for each house as most of the oceanfront houses in Deep Cove have jetties. I completed my model by adding star fish in the water.

When I started setting up at school, I added water and ice. The ice represented the glaciers that are melting and causing sea levels to rise. Sea levels rose globally with 17 centimeters in the last century. Before the ice started to melt, I marked where the water level was at the beginning. As the ice melted into the water, it made the water level go up, and I showed people how much is has risen already. The predictions is that the sea level will rise 30-120 cm by 2100.

To round off my project, I had a slideshow on my iPad showing the main facts about global warming and the impact on the environment. In the slideshow I also mentioned the growing jellyfish population which is visible in Deep Cove waters. This increase can be the result of warmer ocean temperatures and ocean acidification.
