This week, we read further into the play- Act 3! We also watched Act 3 of two film versions of Romeo and Juliet— Romeo and Juliet, directed by Franco Zefirelli, and Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann. To demonstrate what I’ve learned this week, I created a fake TV news broadcast describing the events of Act 3 Scene 1 as if they were happening in real time. The idea is that this is the chorus, describing the events of the play. I even called the News channel ‘Chorus News.’
While writing the script for this news broadcast, I had to really study the scene, the characters, their relationships, and what they did. I tried to convey how the rest of Verona felt when the Montagues and Capulets spent years quarrelling. The newscaster is upset with both sides, believing that Romeo’s banishment is a good thing, and that it will lead to less violence. This shows that the chorus recognizes the tragedy of the things that have happened, while others are so caught up in the feud that all they can do is be angry at the other side. The chorus will have to adapt as the play continues, and more tragic events unfold. I’m excited for next week!
