We are more informed about world events and connected to the rest of the world than we have ever been in history.
One of the reasons the Vietnam anti-war movement became so prominent was the photojournalists who travelled to Vietnam, documenting the war up-close, and sending the photos back to the US. There, people were able to really see the horrors of the war for the first time.
Now, with the invention of the smartphone and the internet, anyone can take a photo or write something and instantly upload it to be shared where the entire world can see it. This means that people are more informed, and are forming opinions on things that don’t directly affect them, leading to a much larger general discussion. A common example of this today is online petitions; anyone can find a petition with an important cause, even if it’s on the other side of the world, and sign it to show their support. This interconnectedness has changed our society and how we view the world.
