Last week, we finally finished our Deep Cove Historical Walking Tour and switched to our newest project!
We spent the first couple days of the week finishing up every part of the tour. My group, the Wolves, spent a class finishing the pamphlet and doing a reflection on the project. Soon, I’ll finish my more extensive reflection, which is my blog post for this unit!
This past weekend, I got the chance to do the final Historical Walking Tour (for now), and it was incredible! All of the digital enhancements that we had made added to the experience of walking around the Cove, learning about the history. I really liked reading the pamphlet, and being able to follow its map. It was also really cool to see my stop!
Then, in the middle of the week, we switched projects, teachers, and classrooms!
Our new project is called Shrew You, and it will focus on women’s rights, and how the treatment of women has changed over time. We’ve already begun discussing women’s representation in media, including scenes from TV shows from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and a clip of Jane Thornthwaite’s recent comments about her fellow MLA, Bowinn Ma. We’ve also looked at the women’s suffrage movement, in Britain, Canada, and the US. Suffrage tactics in Britain and the US were much more brutal than they were in Canada, which is really interesting to read about and discuss.
Soon, we’ll start doing the first milestones for this project, which includes writing paragraphs using our curricular competencies, and analyzing the text of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ by William Shakespeare. I’m looking forward to that!
