Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.

My Reflections of Grouth mindset

Throughout the year, we have been constantly reminded of growth mindset, in not only our learning, but also in our way of thinking. For the first part of term one we started learning about growth mindset and fixed mindset. Even at the very beginning I really enjoyed the subject because it made me think and reconsider my Mindset style.  From then in till now I have worked hard on boxing out the fixed mindset and encouraging the growth mindset. Even in retrospect I can se how much it has changed my life in such a short time.

In the very beginning we learned all about grit and how that plays in to having a growth mindset. We took a grit quiz and even watched a video on a cat trying to get onto a hammock and how it showed grit. This gave us a great example in figuring out what grit looks like. Once we watched the video we took grit into our own hands. Our teachers gave us a quiz called the grit quiz. It was supposed to measure your amount of grit on a scale. Personally, I had mixed feeling about the quiz, because I think that you can’t measure a mental and fiscal quality on a piece of paper. In another blog post I go in to more detail on this subject so be sure to check that out. http://www.blog44.ca/lucao/2016/09/26/grit-is-it-bad-or-is-it-good/

We also tied long term goals in to our growth mindset studies. I really enjoyed the topic and fond a way to tie the subject into real life. I have summarized the subject into only the paragraph I wrote. (One activity I am going to work hard on this year is soccer. I have been playing soccer since I was three, and since five playing on a team. Once I came to Canada I started on a bronze or house team. A house team is a team that participates in a less competitive section of a league. I was put on a team with people I didn’t know, the ultimate way to make friends. Unfortunately, thing didn’t go to plan, lets just say that the coach was not a favourite between my parents, my self, and others left un-named. Soon after that I was transferred to a team with the friends I had met at school earlier that year.

The season of soccer flew by, and soon I realized that playing soccer on a team wasn’t the hardest obstacle I would have to face. At the end of each season you could try out for a higher and more competitive level. I was assigned to tryout for Gold a level two higher then the one I was currently in. Not just the stress, but also the lack of confidence sent me spinning out of control, and landing in a level called Silver. From then in till now I have realized how much I failed getting to Gold. Though it wasn’t the ‘I really messed up’ fail but the ‘I can do better fail’. This year I hope to accomplish the goal that was left in the dust so many years ago.

The one idea that inspires me to preserver is that I can alway do better because I am always practicing and improving. Not just this but also my passion for the game keeps me playing. This year I would like to keep moving forward in my studies. For even if I make a mistake or fail I will know that I am still moving forward because I am still learning and improving.)
Through the lesson we wrote paragraphs representing our knowledge on growth mindset, just like the one above. One project that really

stood out was the paragraph we wrote on a famous person with growth mindset. The person I choose pro this project is Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan or “MJ” as some people call him, is a famous pro basketball player. He has played for teams like the Chicago Bulls, and the Washington Wizards. He is an all around favourite, and has won many different medals and rewords. I picked MJ because he didn’t always standout as the best, in fact he even got cut from his high school basket ball team.

Unlike other basketball players that have fixed mindset he showed the grit and determination which proved he had a growth mindset. Yet, most surprisingly he became a fan favourite and a amazingly good basketball player. One thing he said that demonstrated growth mindset was “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something, but I can’t accept not trying”-Michael Jordan. I think that it represents a growth mindset because he talks about Failure and how he has learned from it. He inspired me to use my growth mind set because he proved to me that it is actually beneficial to have a growth mindset, and that when you put a lot of effort in to something it really pays of.

Another, and the newest project we did was a growth mindset selfie. It was another connection to long term goals but in a more obvious way. We had to create a sentence explains a long term goal for this year. The goal had to be some how connected to school. After we had written our sentence, and had it approved by my teacher Ms. Willemse, we set out to find a photo that captured not only the long term goal, but also the viewers eye. For the photo we had one main rule and that was that it had to be of your face, therefor achieving the title, selfie. In the end I learned all about setting and achieving long term goals, and over all it was a great experience. One thing I would do differently would be finding the photo first so that you can base the goal on the photo. As you can see i really like the growth mindset way of thinking and not only understand growth mindset better but also let it influence my everyday knowledge.
