Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.

MPOL Blog Post 2019

This last bit of my school year has been incredibly influential for me as a learner. As the topics get harder and more serious, my creative views narrow and set like a new cast sporting my thesis’s. In all of my classes I have produced exceptional work and have been on top of my learning.

There have also been many challenges that I have had over come, and many ideas that have come to life before my very eyes. I am proud of the work I have completed this semester down to the worksheets and in class exercises. I have progressed as a learner from the start of the school year till now and plan to progress on an even steeper scale before the end of this school year.

Even though there have been many successes when it comes to my learning, the less common mistakes and failures exemplify my progress exponentially. The fist challenge that comes to my mind is learning to edit over live “speed bumps.’ In maker we created many different videos that have preposed the same challenge, but one really introduced me to this problem as a learner.

The live event project helped me conquer this problem first hand. The project consisted of three main steps in making good content. Pre-productions, Filming, and Post-production. For the Pre-production aspect of the movie  we had to create an action plan. This action plan was a strait forward way of combining a screenplay and a shot list. When creating my action plan I had to take into consideration all of the shots guaranteed to be accessible at the live event.

My live event was the Seycove swim meet. I chose this live event because I could get a verity of different camera angles. At the swim meet I collected as many shots as I could, So that it would be easier to edit the video later. One part of the project I haven’t mentioned yet is the interview. I decided to interview myself because I could really control what was said.

When I went back and edited later, I added video over the interview audio. Finally, I set to work editing my video. I first added the music adding shots so that they would line up. This gave the effect of what some people call a “sports edit”. The hardest part about this project was editing the footage to include what I wanted, even if it was surrounded with what I didn’t want. A good example of this is when a video clip would be off a pan of the pool and I only wanted parts of the pan I had to devolve the parts of the pan that it wanted to that it ran smoothly.

In humanities we worked on a project that really set the bar as the most challenging video project to create. This project was called the book trailer project, and was simple in instruction, but hard in production. We based the trailer off the book More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. More Happy Than Not, was an incredible eye opening book about a young male in the Bronx.

Even though depressing at times, this book out lined the inquiry Question at the How do Authors Use Text to Teach us More About Ourselves? After reading the book, we were given a task. We had to create a movie trailer introducing our book to a young audience. The hardest part of the creation of this video was the acting and finding the correct setting.

The book is set in the Bronx, so to recreate that in Vancouver we had our work cut out for us. One important scene we wanted to include in the trailer was a scene set in a comic store. Luckily one of our group members(Adlih) visited a comic book store that matched the description entirely. A few days later, we set out as a group to try to film this scene and many others.

To our luck the comic book store let us film for our project and we were able to create a video that at least somewhat resembled our creative vision. The final reason why this video was one of the hardest to create is the fact that I had to play someone with the opposite sexual preference to mine. This was hard to get my head around and was definitely hard to accurately portray. Taking up challenges like these is what helps me progress as a learner.

In scimathics I have completed many projects that have each helped me progress as a learner in different ways. One project that required me to innovate was the trigonometry Solar Panel project. For this Project we were assigned to create a model, digital or physical, of a solar panel set up in any location.

The task was to find the optimal angle for you solar pane. I was in a group with a close friend for this project and really enjoyed working with him on the building of our solar panel structure. We created a building on an app called Minecraft. Since I had previously used it for school work I knew that it would be a good idea to create a time laps of our building. Check out our video so you can see how creative our project became and how it really pushed me to finding new ways to create.

This last term and a half has been quite influential in my learning. I have advanced my knowledge in editing, played new and challenging roles, and created sky scrapers to des Cove the influence of trigonometry in solar panels even though these are just some of the projects that i have finished over these past few months they really have shaped how i learn today. In the meantime I am able to use these skills on a day to day basis, creating videos for my parents work, and just being creative in general. To progress as a learner you just need to exercise your mind, and always be open to new ideas and challenges.
