How Video Games Have Become Social

Like most kids my age, I like to play video games. I like getting lost in a virtual world, and even though it doesn’t take up a big part of my life, I find it making an impact on a day to day spectrum. I’m not an everyday gamer, I really just don’t have the time to grind for a couple of hours to get the newest skin, level up, or complete a quest. This effects me in different ways. On a social level it’s hard because with some people Video Games are their life, and if you can’t conect on that basic level of interest, than its hard staying friends.

Anouther reason it’s hard on that social level is because it’s a common topic of conversation. It’s almost as natural as asking if you saw the football game over the weekend. “How many wins do you have,” or “Do you play on console or on PC”, are common topics of conversation. If you don’t have have that concession with people it’s hard to find that common median of interest. Since you can play with friends in game, and can talk on headsets with built in microphones, video games have become a secondary way of becoming social. What does this mean for playing outside? What long term consequences will arise because of this problem? There are still many questions to be asked on this topic, and because video games already dominate the social aspect of some teens lives their isn’t much we can still do. Here’s a video that also explains the social aspect of video games and goes a little more in-depth on the topic.
