We have just finished learning about poems. Personally for me this is one of the most fun things we have done in PLP because I have always loved writing rhymes and poems. I find it a simple way to express my feelings in the moment. We didn’t just learn about poems, we also learned about terminology used in poetry.
– Simile – A comparison between to unlike things
-Cliche – An overused expression
– Stanza – A paragraph in a poem
– Rhyme scheme – A pattern of rhymes

– Haiku – A poem with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line, and 5 syllables in the last line
– Juxtaposition – Contrasting ideas/images/words placed closely together for effect
– Found Poem – Poem arranged from other text
– Imagery – Words and phrases that appear to our senses
– Mood – The feeling of the poem
– Repetition – To emphasize something
– Alteration – the repetition of consistent sounds

– Onomatopoeia – Words that sound like what they mean
– Euphonium – Words that sound good
– Cacophony – Using non human characteristics to describe something

Theme – Theme is what we can learn from a story
At the very end we were tasked with creating a book out of all of our poems. Click here to watch it!
When we were doing different poems we focussed on worldview a lot. Mostly because your poems are highly influenced by your worldview.
Each poem we did was different. This was the first time I have ever dived deep into poetry and looked at it from all angles. It was really interesting seeing how many aspects there were to poetry, I was so used to just writing rhymes in elementary school that I didn’t know there was so much more to explore! This unit has been a fun change from the Julius Caesar and DI assignments and I think poetry is great for relieving stress. I have learned a ton from this poetry unit. I want you to try writing a poem, I think you will love it!
