Destination Imagination: Provincials

Destination Imagination is a program that combines real life experiences with challenges to help kids learn more about problem solving in all aspects of life. In the beginning of grade 8 we were introduced to Destination Imagination, we were split into groups and each one was assigned a certain topic. Our group (Daniel, Kiefer, Raina, Kai, and Me) was assigned ”Show And Tech” our challenge was that we had to tell a story while achieving certain “tech effects” such as a page in a book turning or the waves in the ocean moving while also at some point moving one of the team members across the stage without any human interference.

Our planning started with a script which Raina generously put togsether for us. The story was about a kings son who was tasked with defeating a lake monster, our idea was that we could have the king’s son in a boat with wheels that would some how get him across the stage. After months of revision, editing, and critique we were finally ready for provincials.

Until Kai found out a week before that he wasn’t going to be there. It was a mad rush trying to figure out each others roles, I got assigned Kai’s part. I spent countless hours practising my lines trying to memorize my lines and on the night before I finally new I was ready. It was packed at provincials.

The school we were in was in Surrey. Our times were 11am for our instant challenge and 2pm for our main challenge. Our instant challenge was that we had to use a sheet of newspaper, 5 pipe cleaners, 5 straws, and other objects to try and hold up a plastic plate at least 30cm above the ground and then put weights on the plate to see how much the structure could hold. We managed to get it 25cm tall and the structure was able to hold all of the weights. We ended up winning first place in the instant challenge! For our main challenge we had to wait a long time. We had a 3 hour gap between our instant challenge and our main challenge.

When the time eventually came, we were fully prepared. Since Kai was away I had to memorize all of his lines in less than 5 days. The night before DI me and my mom practised for over 2 hours. My hard work eventually payed off because we ended up coming in first place again! At the award ceremony after all of the challenges were over they announced the winners. The edgy Spheres won both the instant challenge and came in first place for the main challenge, we came first in everything!
