A Day On The Job

Yesterday was take your kid to work day, A day where Grade 9’s come to work with one of their parents, Yesterday I went to my Dad’s work, my dad is the executive director of Youth Unlimited in the lower mainland. Youth Unlimited helps young people discover their potential. From prevention to helping kids on the margins, their dedicated staff and relevant programming offer connection and transformation fostering mental, physical, social, spiritual and emotional well-being among young people in Greater Vancouver.

The first stop my Dad and I made was at North Vancouver city hall for the first meeting of City Fest 2018. City fest is British Columbia’s biggest youth festival, it celebrates art, music, skateboarding, and good food. In 2015 they had over 6,000 people attending! It is hosted at Lonsdale skateboard park and in the parking lot that surrounds it. This meeting was the first meeting this year about the festival which will take place next year on may 5th 2018.

It was mostly just about the rundown of what they are going to do differently and something’s they are going to change. It was really interesting to see people who are genuinely interested in helping youth like me! After the meeting we headed to my dad’s office in Surrey, the office is where a lot of the decisions are made but not really where the action takes place. I interviewed 3 different people and asked them 4 different questions, what essential skills are necessary to perform your job? what are some of the different things performed in a typical day? what are the academic qualifications for your position? and what their employment prospects are. I filmed thier answers and turned in into sort of a mini edit! (Not really because it turned out to be 8 minutes long)

I really enjoyed the meeting at City Hall but seeing what happens behind the scenes is also really cool, I have been to my Dad’s office many times before but I never really took the time to go into so much detail. Seeing how a job works inside and out was really cool, especially the job my dad has. I have a lot of respect for him since he is the boss of all of lower mainland youth unlimited, and I love how his job comes right back to teenagers like me! I thought seeing my Dads work was a fun, unique, and interesting expirence I will never forget. Mostly because I got to see something I have never seen before. I am excited for when I have a job and I get to experience this journey for myself!
