You don’t look a day past 149 Canada!

Canada, ranked the second best country in the world in 2016 in U.S.News, yet currently only 149 years old! Yes! Canada will be turning 150 this 1st of July.

Now what would be a better way to celebrate this very special birthday than by a project… My class and I were assigned to enter the Here’s My Canada contest for this project.

This contest involved making a 30 second video on what Canada means to you. It started with two representatives of Here’s my Canada coming to our class and talking about what the contest rules were.

They gave us this rubric to understand how we were going to be assessed:

Marley and I decided to do this contest together and just split the prize. The prize for our category would be 5,000$! We discussed our ideas on what our video should be like. Luckily we were both on the same page and our ideas complemented each others very well.

When you look at our video it is obvious to see how much editing our ideas went through. We went with brand new ideas since we noticed too many people were leading towards the “stereotype” idea and wanted to do something unique.

We then finalized our script that would be read by one of us on the video:

“My Canada makes every moment count,

because we make our own history.

Wether we fail or we succeed, we all come together in support of one another.

People we meet, friends we make, all capture the true meaning of what it’s like to be Canadian.

With the freedom comes endless possibilities.

Here in Canada the sky isn’t normal, its a barrier waiting to be knocked down.”

To make the video Marley used Final Cut Pro. Our last edit of the video included clips Marley had filmed previously that showed the beauty of Canada and daily life. These clips went with a voice over of Marley reading the script we wrote.

The best way to show this is our final copy of the video! So here it is!

When I first started the project I didn’t really think that much of it. I also thought that we were making too big of a deal about a country’s birthday. I definitely think this project made us think more deeply about Canada, how it is such a great place, and how we are so fortunate to be able to live here. In the end this video making process brought a sense of Canadian Pride to me and made me feel extremely privileged to be able to do what I love, and follow my dreams.

To finish it off I will add 50 insane facts about Canada from Post Media News.
