Going To Work

Take your kids to work day happens once a year for grade nines all across the province. On that day parents take their kids (or their kids friends) to work. Sometimes places have activities for the kids to do but sometimes they don’t. We were tasked with learning a little bit more about what our parents do for a living.

Me looking at one last plan

For my day I went to my dads work. My dad owns a plumbing company called GPH mechanical. Sometimes he has to go out and work on site in the buildings but some days he stays at home doing quotes and filing paperwork.  On the day that I was there we stayed home. He taught me all about how he writes quotes for buildings and how to “read” or look at blueprints for some of the buildings he’s working on. Two things in particular that he showed that I thought were extra interesting were some of the math he had to do. Wether it was doing calculations for employees pay and figuring out how to integrate the tax or ordering parts for certain jobs. And look at the blue prints and building plans. To look and the building plans and make changes to them you had to look at the measurements of the of the walls on the the plan then check what you have to remove and erase it. Once you had done that too you had to check the exact dimensions of the machines, walls, or parts you were adding and covert the space on the paper to the space in the actual room.

To look back on the day I thought it was a really fun and interesting way to learn about the real world and what different people decide to do for their life and career. When I get older I’m still not one hundred percent sure what I want to do. I don’t think I want to to own my own business because even though there would be some great things about it like being able to decide your next business move or having complete freedom in your decisions I think I want to be able to have more of a solid schedule and always have a concrete plan ahead of me so I always know wha to be doing. Anyways, that’s my look back to take your kids to work day 2017.
