As the year comes to a close, PLP celebrates. We celebrate by showing off our learning collectively at the annual spring exhibition. A night where everyone can create something good and collaborate to make it great.
This year, the PLP 10’s whole exhibition was based around BC. Everyone did a topic that surrounded or had something to do with BC. The reason we chose BC is because we recently went on a trip around BC and explored many similarities and contrasts in the province. Wether that meant something geographically related or the people in BC or the industry.
After many revisions and changes to my idea I decided to take an ecologically focused look at BC and oil. If you live here you’ve probably heard many of the controversies around the pipeline, plastic straw bans and many other economy VS environment arguments. Instead of taking a side I decided I would try to create a project based around finding a medium in between these arguments and finding a balanced, easy ways to cut down on oil use. In my project I showed how many people are strongly opinionated and how stopping oil completely will not work but we also do need to take steps to save the planet. I decided to show this by gathering items that are everyday oil using objects and then also finding eco friendly alternatives. I displayed these in two separate groups and I created a keynote to go along with it. It’s really surprising how much you can do for the planet so easily. Things like not using single use bottles, straws and just limiting waste.
Once I had my solo project done I still had a lot to do. In the grade ten room we were divided into four groups with different themes. My groups theme was explore BC and we wanted to create a really aesthetic, minimalistic space to we could just highlight our projects. With group collaboration we incorporated nature by adding leaves beaches and plants from the nearby area and then we had a very modern, outdoorsy feel. Our group was also the only group incorporating natural light which really added to the vibe. After setting all this up we were ready to present to the world.
For the actual presentation and exhibition there’s not too much to say. I knew all my facts and my project really well so it went smoothly for me the whole night. I think my groups area was one of the best looking and we were really busy showing people what we created the whole night. To be honest a lot of people were actually surprised to find out certain products that they used contained oil and a lot of people realized that they could make easy changes to stop supporting oil but also not impact their lives majorly.
In reflection I’m really happy with how things went and I feel like I did a really good job this exhibition. I really like how we were focused on an interesting topic and learned things that will help us throughout our lives. I feel like educating myself and taking initiative on important topics makes school feel more meaningful and it makes me happy knowing I’m learning on impactful life long topics that are centred around my future.
