Twenty Seven

The famous 27 club, we’ve all heard about it. Some of the worlds biggest musicians all dying at age 27. Names like Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Amy winehouse all passed away at this mysterious age. So the question is why? Is this just a coincidence or is there something going on behind the scenes?

Well after a quick Google search, the internet will tell you there is no statistical anomaly and that it is indeed coincidental to see this many recognizable names all dying at 27. Not a satisfying answer.

I have a different proposal that doesn’t exactly agree with Google. I believe that all of these super stars (the biggest stars only) die at 27 due to the combination of substance abuse, their spiralling fame and pent up mental health issues all finally coming down on them.

The reason the internet says otherwise is because of an incorrect sample size. When looking at all people or even musicians, you are sampling such a wide population that you won’t get accurate results. To properly asses this situation you have to instead only look at these mega superstars, the elite few who make it to the top.

All data sets can be influenced

These people are usually tragedy stricken people who persevered through rough child hoods and struggle with addiction terminally. These people die at 27 because their bodies and minds are worn out, they are alienated and tired and can no longer uphold society’s expectations of them.
