This is my first project in Scimatics. This was a small and easy project because we had to make a spreadsheet that recorded the amount of screen time we used everyday for a week. I also recorded my sleep and made 4 charts that showed the different amounts of screen time or sleep.
We had to find out how many hours of screens we used a week and I got a rather harsh answer, 63 hours in one week! Everyday I added the amount of time I was on my iPad, phone, game console, and Tv from the day before. At the end, I was surprised by the answer but the amount of sleep I got seemed right. I added some charts that showed the difference between total phone and iPad screen time hours to total non iPad and phone screen time hours, total screen time hours to total non screen time hours, the amount of sleep I got that week, and the amounts of time that where spent on a screen every day. At the end, we all made a one minute presentation and presented our spreadsheets and charts to the whole class.
Throughout the project, we did a couple other assignments apart from recording everyday’s worth of screen time. We did fraction worksheets almost everyday. We did adding fractions, subtracting fractions, adding mixed numbers, and subtracting mixed numbers. We used codes/tricks so that the spreadsheet added up the totals by itself so I found that to be really cool. It was interesting how much I relied on screens to entertain me.
Curriculum Competencies
Applying and innovating: I used my class time efficiently during class when working on assignments and tests. I used the time I got to complete what I could of my assignments so I wouldn’t have homework. After I finished the assignment, I either started working on the next assignment or used my free time to quietly play a game.
Understanding and solving: I made a spreadsheet that records the amount of time I’m on a screen everyday. I also added the average fraction/ percent of a day spent on a screen including the totals of everyday’s use of screen and sleep time. I did really good with this one because I added everything and put it in the proper format.
Communicating and representing: I made 2 pie charts, one ring shaped chart, and a bar graph to determine the different amounts of screen time and sleep I got. Each one of them showed the percent of the amounts that I used. I also did great on this part because I had 4 charts and each one was quite different from each other.
Overall this has been a great project and I really enjoyed completing this spreadsheet.
